[Overview] This product is also known as Xunqu, Weiquji, Haxini, and Stinking Ferula. It is the resin secreted by plants of the Apiaceae family: Ferula sinkiangensis K.M. Shen or Ferula fukanensis K.M. Shen from Xinjiang. Mainly produced in Xinjiang. During late spring to early summer, from full bloom to early fruiting stage, the upper part of the stem is cut obliquely downward multiple times to collect the exuded milky resin, which is then air-dried.
[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen and stomach meridians.
[Actions] Resolves food accumulation, disperses epigastric distension, kills parasites.
[Applications]
1. Used for food accumulation and abdominal distension, often combined with Hawthorn and Shenqu, as in the formula Awei Pill (阿魏丸); if accompanied by qi stagnation, can be combined with Mu Xiang and Bing Lang. When combined with Hu Huang Lian and Shenqu, it can treat pediatric malnutrition with abdominal distension and pain, as in Hu Huang Lian Pill (胡黄连丸).
2. Used for masses such as zhengjia (abdominal masses), epigastric lumps, scrofula, and goiter; can be taken internally or applied externally. For qi and blood stasis causing zhengjia and epigastric lumps, often combined with Bie Jia, Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Dahuang, as in Awei Huapi Powder (阿魏化痞散); or combined with Chi Shao, Pangolin scales, Liangtoujian, and Dahuang to prepare plasters for external use, as in Awei Plaster (阿魏膏); for treating malaria-related epigastric lumps, can be combined with Bai Jie Zi, Frankincense, Myrrh, and Pangolin scales, boiled into a plaster for external application; for early-stage goiter, scrofula, and breast rock, can be combined with Realgar, Musk, and Toad Venom to prepare plasters for external use, as in Awei Huajian Plaster (阿魏化坚膏).
Additionally, it can be used for parasite-induced abdominal pain.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: incorporated into pills or powders, 1–1.5 g. External use: appropriate amount, boiled into medicinal plasters or ground into powder and incorporated into plasters for topical application.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in patients with spleen and stomach deficiency and in pregnant women.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Ferula resin contains volatile oils, resin, and gum. The oil contains various sulfur-containing compounds such as (R)-sec-butyl 1-propenyl disulfide, 1-(1-methylthio-propyl)-1-propenyl disulfide, and sec-butyl 3-methylthio-allyl disulfide. The resin contains ferulic acid and its esters.
2. Pharmacological effects: The volatile oil emulsion of Ferula has anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive effects; Ferula suspension significantly inhibits spontaneous contractions of isolated uterus in non-pregnant mice and rabbits; two fat-soluble components of Ferula showed 100% early pregnancy termination rate in mice, and 92% and 93% mid-pregnancy termination rates. Decoctions and hydroalcoholic extracts of Xinjiang Ferula reduce the amplitude of heartbeat in isolated frog hearts and increase heart rate.
