[Overview] This herb is also known as Yahulu, Golden Silk Lotus Leaf, and Yahlong. It is the whole plant of Cissampelos Pareira L. var. hirsuta (Buch.-Ham. ex DC) Forman, a plant of the Menispermaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other regions. It is harvested in spring and autumn, cleaned of soil, and sun-dried. It is cut into sections and used raw.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, warm in nature. Enters the liver and spleen meridians.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and relieves pain; stops bleeding and promotes tissue regeneration.

[Applications]
1. Used for traumatic injuries and bleeding wounds. For bruises and contusions, it can be combined with safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Angelica sinensis, etc.; for traumatic bleeding, it can be combined with Panax notoginseng (Jingtian Sanqi), Yunnan Baiyao, and others.
2. Used for rheumatic bi syndrome with joint or lumbar pain. For predominantly cold-damp conditions, it can be combined with Angelica pubescens (Duhuo), processed Aconitum (Zhifu Pian), Eucommia ulmoides (Duzhong), Taxillus chinensis (Sangjisheng), and Cinnamon twig (Guizhi); for predominantly damp-heat conditions, it can be combined with Phellodendron (Huangbai), Achyranthes bidentata (Niuxi), Reynoutria japonica (Huzhang), Lonicera vine (Rendong Teng), and mulberry twig (Sangzhi).

[Dosage and Administration] External use: appropriate amount, fresh herb pounded and applied topically; or powdered and sprinkled; or mixed with alcohol or egg white for topical application. Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in patients with severe myasthenia gravis.

Pharmacological effects: Hayatine iodide salt has muscle relaxant effects; cissampelotine methyl (hayatine) excites isolated intestinal segments; water decoctions of Cissampelos leaves and stems inhibit guinea pig ileum and rat uterus; hayatine iodide salt has significant and sustained hypotensive effects; cissampelotine exhibits cytotoxic activity against human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and can inhibit tumor cell growth.
