[Overview] This herb is also known as Hulan, Xiao Zelan, Hupu, and Fengyao. It is the aerial part of Lycopus lucidus Turcz. var. hirtus Regel, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is widely distributed across most regions of China, with main production areas in Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Zhejiang, and Hubei provinces. Harvest in summer and autumn when stems and leaves are luxuriant; cut the aerial parts, segment, and dry in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly warm in nature. Enters the liver and spleen meridians.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and dispels blood stasis, promotes urination to reduce swelling, detoxifies and resolves abscesses.

[Applications]
1. Used for various syndromes of blood stasis in women. For blood stasis causing amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, often combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Carthamus tinctorius (Honghua), and Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu). For postpartum lochia retention and lower abdominal pain, often combined with Leonurus japonicus (Yimucao), Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora (Chishao), Corydalis yanhusuo, or Pollen Typhae and Trogopterus dung (Wulingzhi). For women with yin deficiency and blood weakness, scanty menstruation progressing to amenorrhea, or primary amenorrhea in virgins, combined with Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, and honey-fried Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Zhigancao), as in Zelan Decoction (泽兰汤).
2. Used for edema and ascites. Particularly suitable for edema caused by blood stasis obstructing water retention, often combined with Stephania tetrandra (Fangji), Poria cocos (Fuling), Alisma orientale (Zexie), and Plantago asiatica seeds (Cheqianzi). For edema treatment, often combined with Stephania tetrandra in powdered form and taken with vinegar decoction.
3. Used for traumatic injuries, abscesses, and ulcers. For bruising and swelling pain caused by trauma, combined with Angelica sinensis, Carthamus tinctorius, Eupolyphaga sinensis (Dibiechong), and Boswellia (Ruxiang). For early-stage abscesses and boils with swelling and pain, taken internally with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Forsythia suspensa (Lianqiao), Angelica sinensis, etc., decocted together; fresh herb can be pounded and applied topically. Decoction used for fumigation and washing also treats postpartum vulvar ulcers.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g, or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount of fresh herb pounded and applied topically; or decoction used for fumigation and washing.

[Cautions] Use with caution in patients without blood stasis or blood deficiency.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains sugars such as glucose, galactose, lycopose, raffinose, stachyose, and sucrose; also contains insect wax acid, betulinic acid, ursolic acid, and β-sitosterol.
2. Pharmacological effects: The aqueous extract of Herb Lycopi significantly improves microcirculation disorders in experimentally induced blood stasis rabbits, reduces blood viscosity, fibrinogenuria content, and erythrocyte aggregation index; the decoction inhibits thrombus formation time, thrombus length, and wet weight; preparations from the whole plant have cardiotonic effects.
3. Clinical reports: Epidemic hemorrhagic fever—20% Carthamus tinctorius and Herb Lycopi injection 20–30 ml, mixed with equal volume of 25% or 50% glucose injection, administered intravenously 1–2 times daily.
