[Overview] This herb is also known as Nai Mi, Wang Bu Liu, and Mai Lan Zi. It is the mature seed of Vaccaria segetalis (Neck.) Garcke, a plant of the Caryophyllaceae family. Except for the South China region, it is distributed in almost all other provinces and regions. The whole plant is harvested when the fruit matures in summer but before the pericarp cracks, then dried in the sun. The seeds are threshed out, impurities removed, and dried again.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Invigorates blood and regulates menstruation; promotes lactation and reduces swelling of breast abscesses; promotes urination and unblocks painful urinary dribbling.
[Applications]
1. Used for women’s dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea due to blood stasis. If caused by Liver Qi stagnation and disharmony of Chong and Ren vessels with abdominal pain during menstruation or amenorrhea, it is often combined with Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), etc. If pain is due to blood stasis causing scanty dark menstruation or amenorrhea, it is combined with Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), etc.
2. Used for insufficient lactation or scanty milk after childbirth. If caused by Liver Qi stagnation leading to blocked milk flow and breast distension and pain, it is often combined with Chai Hu, Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chuan Shan Jia (Manis Squama), etc. If due to Qi and blood deficiency causing scanty milk, it can be cooked with pig’s trotters or combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Dang Gui, etc. for decoction.
3. Used for breast abscess (ru yin) and early-stage carbuncles. Postpartum insufficient lactation often develops into breast abscess; it can be combined with Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba), Chuan Shan Jia, Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Dang Gui, Lou Lu (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma), etc. For carbuncles, it can be taken alone as a powder or combined with other heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs.
4. Used for hot painful urinary dribbling (re lin), blood painful urinary dribbling (xue lin), and stone painful urinary dribbling (shi lin). Often combined with Dong Kui Zi (Malvae Fructus), Qu Mai (Dianthi Herba), Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium), Hua Shi (Talcum), etc. Currently, it is often combined with Tao Ren, Hong Hua, Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), and Bai Jiang Cao (Patriniae Herba) to treat prostatitis with significant efficacy.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.
[Cautions]
1. Chemical constituents: Seeds contain vaccaria saponins; hydrolysis of saponins yields vaccaria secondary saponins. Also contains flavonoid glycosides such as vaccaria flavonoid glycoside and isoflavone saponin. Additionally contains phospholipids, beta-sitosterol, calcium and magnesium phytate, etc.
2. Pharmacology: Decoctions and alcohol extracts of Vaccaria seed have a stimulating effect on isolated rat uterus; alcohol extracts show anti-implantation effects in early pregnancy; aqueous and ethanol extracts inhibit Ehrlich ascites carcinoma and lung cancer.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Mastitis: Using 20 g Vaccaria seed and 50 g Pu Gong Ying, decocted twice and taken orally once daily. In 28 cases of early mastitis with redness, swelling, heat, pain, hard nodules, and blood stasis accompanied by chills and fever, all showed significant improvement after one dose, cured after 2–3 doses, with no cases of suppuration. 2) Herpes Zoster: Appropriate amount of Vaccaria seed (dose based on lesion size) stir-fried over low heat until half the seeds pop, ground into fine powder; fresh cactus is peeled and de-spined, mixed with Vaccaria powder into a paste and applied externally once daily until healed. In 26 cases, 15 cured in 4 days, 8 in 7 days, 3 in 10 days. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2003, 22(9):568]
3) Sudden deafness: Oral Vaccaria seed liquid, 1 vial per dose (equivalent to 30 g crude drug), twice daily for 30 days per course. In 32 cases, 2 cured, 7 markedly effective, 15 effective, 8 ineffective; total effective rate 75%. [Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1998,(11):22]
4) Smoking cessation via ear acupoints: Ear points Lung, Stomach, Shenmen, Mouth disinfected with 75% alcohol; Vaccaria seeds fixed on points with adhesive tape. Massage 2–3 times daily for 3–5 minutes each; massage again for 3–5 minutes when craving occurs; change medication every 1–2 days; 10 treatments per course. In 158 cases, 66 completely quit smoking, 87 markedly effective, 5 ineffective; total effective rate 96.9%. [Journal of Guangxi Medical University, 2001, 18(3):430]
5) Malposition of fetus: Pregnant women empty bladder, sit, apply Vaccaria seeds to Zhiyin (BL67) point bilaterally, fixed with adhesive tape, pressing 2–3 minutes each time, 4 times daily. In 68 cases, 40 effective after 1 course, 8 after 2 courses, 20 ineffective. [Chinese Folk Therapy, 2002, 10(3):29]
