[Overview] This herb is also known as Four Seasons Flower, Monthly Red, and Moonlight Flower. It is the flower of Rosa chinensis Jacq., a plant of the Rosaceae family. It is widely cultivated throughout China, mainly produced in Jiangsu, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces, with Jiangsu having the largest output and best quality. It can be harvested year-round, picked when the flower is slightly open, then dried in the shade or by low-temperature baking.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and regulates menstruation, soothes the Liver and relieves depression, detoxifies and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for liver qi stagnation and qi and blood stasis causing irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and amenorrhea. Often combined with Angelica sinensis, Leonurus japonicus, Cyperus rotundus, Salvia miltiorrhiza, and others. Reports indicate that stewing Flos Rosae Chinensis with rooster meat and consuming before menstruation has good effects on dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and infertility.
2. Used for traumatic injuries, scrofula, and carbuncles. For traumatic injuries, combined with Eupolyphaga sinensis; for scrofula, combined with Prunella vulgaris, Fritillaria, and Ostrea; for carbuncles and swelling, fresh herb used alone or combined with alum powder applied topically.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 1.5–4.5 g; or brewed as tea. External use: appropriate amount, fresh herb pounded and applied to affected area, or dry herb powdered and applied topically.

[Cautions] Not suitable for prolonged decoction. Use with caution in cases of spleen deficiency with loose stools, pregnancy, and excessive menstruation.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Flos Rosae Chinensis contains volatile oils, mainly terpenoid compounds such as nerolidol, nerol, citronellol and their glucosides, as well as gallic acid, quercetin, tannins, pigments, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: It has strong antifungal activity; the antifungal active component isolated is gallic acid.
3. Clinical reports: For occult coronary heart disease, 30 g fresh Flos Rosae Chinensis is washed and brewed with rock sugar (or honey) in boiling water, drunk frequently, can be brewed 3 times, with a total daily volume of about 800–1000 ml.
