[Overview] This herb is also known as Yimingzi, Yimuzi, and Xiao Huma. It is the mature fruit of Leonurus japonicus Houtt., a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is produced throughout China. The aerial parts are harvested when the fruit matures in autumn, dried in the sun, then the fruit is separated by threshing and impurities such as leaves are removed.

[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and regulates menstruation; clears the Liver and improves vision.

[Applications] 1. Used for various blood stasis syndromes related to menstruation and childbirth in women, such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, or incomplete lochia discharge with lower abdominal pain after delivery. For blood stasis and qi stagnation causing irregular menstruation, it is often combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu), etc. For blood stasis causing amenorrhea or incomplete lochia discharge with lower abdominal pain, it is often combined with Angelica sinensis, Typhae Pollen (Puhuang), and Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi).
2. Used for headaches, dizziness, irritability, and restlessness caused by Liver heat ascending upward. Often combined with Chrysanthemum flower (Juhua), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao), etc. Currently, Fructus Leonuri is commonly used to treat hypertension, often combined with Huangqin, Xiakucao, Mulberry leaf (Sangye), and Juhua.
3. Used for red, swollen, and painful eyes caused by excessive Liver heat, often combined with Abutilon seed (Qingxiangzi) and Cassia seed (Juemingzi). For Liver deficiency with heat, decreased vision, and eye cataracts, it is combined with Lycium fruit (Gouqizi), Rehmannia root (Shengdi), and Qingxiangzi, as in the formula Chongweizi Wan (茺蔚子丸).
Additionally, Fructus Leonuri has detoxifying and anti-inflammatory effects; when pounded and applied externally, it can be used for acute mastitis. Decoction with Fructus Aurantii (Zhike) is used to treat uterine prolapse.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or incorporated into pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in pregnancy.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents include leonurine, stachydrine, and fatty oils; the main fatty acids in the oil are oleic acid and linoleic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: aqueous or hydroalcoholic extracts of Fructus Leonuri have a mild hypotensive effect when injected intravenously in anesthetized animals.
