[Overview] This herb is also known as Wan Nian Song (Ten-Thousand Year Pine), Chang Sheng Cao (Longevity Herb), Jiu Si Huan Hun Cao (Nine Deaths Return to Life Herb), and Huan Yang Cao (Reviving Herb). It is the whole herb of Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv.) Spring or Selaginella pulvinata (Hook. et Grev.) Maxim., plants of the Selaginellaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hunan, Guangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and other regions. It can be harvested year-round, with roots removed, washed clean, and dried in the sun.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Activates blood circulation, unblocks menstruation, stops bleeding.

[Applications] 1. Used for amenorrhea with dysmenorrhea, abdominal masses (zhengjia), bruises and injuries caused by trauma, and other blood stasis syndromes. For blood stasis causing amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, it can be combined with Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong), and Moutan cortex (Mu Dan Pi). For women with infertility due to blood stasis and abdominal masses, Atractylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu) and Paeonia lactiflora (Bai Shao) can be added to the formula. For bruises and swelling from trauma, it can be used with Boswellia (Ru Xiang), Caesalpinia sappan (Su Mu), and Liu Ji Nu. For abdominal masses, it is often combined with Sparganium stoloniferum (San Leng), Curcuma zedoaria (E Zhu), and Eupolyphaga sinensis (Di Bie Chong). For traumatic injuries, it can be pounded and applied topically or used with Boswellia and Myrrha (Mo Yao).
2. Used for various bleeding disorders. For hematemesis and epistaxis, it is combined with Lotus rhizome nodes (Ou Jie), Imperata cylindrica root (Bai Mao Gen), and large thistle (Da Ji). For hematuria, it is combined with small thistle (Xiao Ji), Gardenia jasminoides (Shan Zhi), and Moutan cortex. For intestinal wind bleeding, it is combined with Biota leaf (Ce Bai Ye) and palm charcoal (Zong Lu Tan). For bleeding hemorrhoids, it is combined with Sanguisorba officinalis (Di Yu), Sophora japonica flower (Huai Hua), and Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin). For continuous metrorrhagia, it is combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), charred leftover blood (Xue Yu Tan), and donkey-hide gelatin (E Jiao). For traumatic bleeding, the herb can be ground into powder and applied externally.
Additionally, it can treat prolapse of rectum due to deficiency, often used with Agrimonia pilosa (Xian He Cao) and jujube (Da Zao). The pounded herb can also be used topically for burns from water or fire and for bedsores.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–10 g; powder, 3–6 g. External use: appropriate amount, fresh herb pounded and applied; or dry powder sprinkled.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in pregnancy. For hemostasis, it can be stir-fried to charcoal.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains biflavonoids such as amentoflavone, robustaflavone, hinokiflavone, isoginkgetin, ginkgetin B, apigenin, trehalose, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Selaginella decoction shows inhibitory effects in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus; it significantly inhibits isolated rabbit small intestine contractions, reducing tension markedly; aqueous or ethanol extracts inhibit mouse sarcoma and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma and can prolong the lifespan of tumor-bearing animals.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Prevention and treatment of postpartum umbilical cord bleeding: Selaginella, Sanguisorba officinalis, and potassium alum were ground finely and mixed in equal parts (1:1:1) for external use. Among 439 cases treated, 433 stopped bleeding after one treatment; 5 cases had slight bleeding after 1 hour but stopped after retreatment. [Journal of Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(1):36] (2) Bedsores: Selaginella, Sanguisorba officinalis, and alum were ground in a 1:2:1 ratio and applied topically, with dressing changes every 24 hours. Among 6 cases treated, 4 with stage IV ulcers healed with scab shedding in 4–5 days; 2 with stage III ulcers healed with scab shedding in 3 days. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987,(1):28] (3) Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: Jiangnan Selaginella (Zidian Qing) was administered orally to adults at 1–2 g three times daily; children received 50–120 mg/kg daily for over one month. The total effective rate was 75.53%, with significant differences in platelet-associated antibodies (PAIgG and PAIgM) before and after treatment (P<0.05), indicating platelet count increase accompanied by antibody decrease.
