[Overview] This herb is also known as Qi Xuejie and Wood Dragon’s Blood. It is the resin exuded from the fruit of Daemonorops draco Bl., a plant of the palm family, processed into a medicinal form. It is distributed in Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, and cultivated in Taiwan and Guangdong, China. The fruit is harvested and steamed in a basket to exude the resin, or the fruit is crushed and placed in a cloth bag to press out the resin, which is then boiled into a syrup and cooled to solidify into blocks.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and salty; nature: neutral. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Disperses blood stasis and relieves pain; stops bleeding; promotes tissue regeneration.
[Applications] 1. Used for pain caused by blood stasis, such as bruises and swelling from trauma, tendon and bone fractures, and internal bleeding. Often combined with myrrh, borneol, musk, etc., for both internal and external use. For example, in the formula Qili San (Seven Li Powder). For blood stasis chest pain, commonly combined with Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), safflower, Salvia miltiorrhiza, and used in modern treatment of coronary heart disease angina pectoris. For abdominal masses and pain, often combined with Sanleng (Sparganium), Ezhu (Curcuma), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). For chronic rheumatic arthralgia with blood stasis in the channels, combined with Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), turmeric, Duhuo (Angelica pubescens). For postpartum blood stasis abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, combined with Danggui, Chuanxiong, Taoren (Persicae Semen), Sanleng.
2. Used for bleeding disorders such as traumatic bleeding, hemorrhoidal bleeding, epistaxis; can be used alone as a powder externally or combined with Sanqi (Panax notoginseng), Bai Ji (Bletilla) for topical application.
3. Used for ulcers, scrofula, and fistulas with ulceration. For chronic non-healing ulcers, applied externally as powder; for purulent hemorrhoidal fistulas, combined with Puhuang (Typha pollen) as powder for topical use, e.g., Puhuang San; for scrofula with persistent pus, combined with Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Ercha (Catechu) as powder applied inside the ulcer.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: powder 0.3–1 g, taken with water or incorporated into pills. External use: appropriate amount of powder sprinkled or applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Not suitable for patients without blood stasis. Contraindicated in pregnant women and during menstruation.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The resin secreted from the surface scales of Daemonorops draco fruit contains dracorhodin, dracoresin, demethyl dracorhodin, demethyl dracoresin, dracorhodin flavane A, as well as acids such as isopimaric acid, isoabietic acid, abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, sandaracopimaric acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Dragon’s Blood promotes fibrinolytic activity but has no significant effect on coagulation time, prothrombin time, or blood viscosity in rabbits; exhibits anti-inflammatory effects but does not significantly antagonize ankle swelling induced by egg white in mice; inhibits bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus beta-hemolyticus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Shigella flexneri, and some fungi; accelerates blood flow and prevents thrombosis; increases cAMP and decreases cGMP levels in rat tissues.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Upper gastrointestinal bleeding: Dragon’s Blood powder orally 1 g four times daily. In 270 patients with bleeding caused by duodenal bulb ulcer, gastric ulcer, compound ulcer, gastritis, esophageal varices rupture, anastomotic ulcer, hookworm disease, gastric cancer, 249 cases achieved hemostasis (fecal occult blood test turned negative), a 95.8% effective rate. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, 19(7):302] (2) Facial neuritis: Dragon’s Blood 12 g, Semen Hyoscyami 30 g, musk 2 g. Dragon’s Blood and Semen Hyoscyami mashed into a paste and evenly spread on cotton cloth, musk sprinkled on top, applied to the facial nerve area in front of the ear, combined with acupuncture. Among 100 cases treated, 86 cured and 14 improved after 2–3 treatments; cured cases had disease duration less than half a month. [Henan Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(4):7] (3) Cervical erosion: Dragon’s Blood powder evenly sprinkled on the erosion surface, covered with a cotton ball with tail, removed after 6–8 hours, once daily or every other day, 7 treatments per course. Among 58 cases, 44 cured, 12 improved, 2 ineffective; effective rate 96.55%. [Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1997, 20(4):25]
