[Overview] This product is the volatile oil obtained by distillation or extraction from the oleoresin exuded from the wood of Pinaceae family plants: Masson’s pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.), Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.), or other species of the same genus. It is mainly produced in Guangdong province, with other provinces also producing it. At about 2 meters above ground on the trunk, an incision is made by removing the rough bark, creating a cut 35–50 cm long, 1–1.3 cm wide, and 1–1.2 cm deep into the wood’s xylem forming a groove. At the base of the groove, a resin collector is installed to gather the oleoresin. The collected oleoresin is heated with water, impurities are filtered out, and then steam distilled. The distillate is separated and dehydrated to obtain turpentine oil.

The main components of turpentine oil, α-pinene and β-pinene, in mixed emulsion form, show a notable litholytic effect. Although this effect is not as strong as that of medicinal turpentine oil, it does not cause significant irritation to the gastrointestinal tract or biliary tract. Locally, there is no congestion, hemorrhage, mucosal necrosis, or inflammatory infiltration observed, indicating relatively low toxicity and side effects.
