[Overview] This product is also known as Danxing. It is a processed product made by mixing finely powdered Arisaema with bile from cattle, sheep, or pigs, or by fermenting raw finely powdered Arisaema with bile from cattle, sheep, or pigs. It is produced in most regions nationwide.
[Properties] Bitter and slightly pungent in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Liver, Gallbladder, and Lung meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and transforms phlegm, extinguishes wind and calms convulsions.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough with phlegm-heat and expectoration of yellow phlegm; can be combined with Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), Trichosanthes seed (Gualouren), and Citrus aurantium (Zhishi). For example, in formulas such as Qingqi Huatan Wan.
2. Used for stroke, pediatric convulsions, epilepsy, and other conditions of internal phlegm-fire with stirring of Liver wind. When phlegm-heat is abundant, often combined with Calculus Bovis (Tianzhu Huang), bamboo sap (Zhuli), and Coptis chinensis (Huanglian). When heat is excessive causing wind movement, convulsions, and epilepsy, often combined with antelope horn (Lingyang Jiao), scorpion (Quanxie), and centipede (Wugong). When phlegm-heat obstructs the Heart causing unconsciousness, often combined with herbs that resolve phlegm and calm the mind such as Yuanzhi and Acorus (Shichangpu).
3. Used for headache and dizziness caused by wind-phlegm disturbing the head; often combined with Gastrodia (Tianma), Uncaria (Gouteng), and Abalone shell (Shijue Ming) and other asthma-relieving herbs.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.
[Modern Research] Clinical reports on pediatric drooling: take 3 parts Evodia rutaecarpa (Wuzhuyu) and 1 part Arisaema Cum Bile, grind into powder, mix with vinegar to form a paste, apply on paper that does not absorb water, and place on Yongquan acupoint every 12 hours for 3–4 consecutive days.
