[Overview] This herb is also known as Suzi, Heisuzi, and Tiesuzi. It is the mature fruit of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is widely cultivated across most regions of China, with main production areas including Hubei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Hebei, and Heilongjiang provinces. The largest yield for antiasthmatic use comes from Hubei. The fruit is harvested in autumn when mature, impurities are removed, and then it is sun-dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung meridian.
[Actions] Descends Qi, resolves phlegm, relieves asthma, moistens the intestines.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough and asthma with copious phlegm and chest fullness. It can be combined with Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), etc. An example formula is Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Fruit Qi-Descending Decoction). For elderly patients with spleen deficiency and poor transport, food stagnation with phlegm, cough and asthma with abundant phlegm, chest and epigastric fullness, and indigestion, it is often combined with Baijizi (Sinapis Semen) and Laifuzi (Raphani Semen), as in Sanzi Yangqin Tang (Three Seeds Nourishing Parents Decoction).
2. Used for dry intestines and constipation, often combined with Huomaren (Cannabis Semen), Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen), etc.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 3–9 g; can be cooked in congee or included in pills and powders. When used to moisten the lungs and stop cough, it is processed with honey; for patients with spleen deficiency, it is prepared as a frost (powder).

1. Chemical constituents include proteins and fatty oils, with the oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids such as linolenic acid and linoleic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Perilla oil inhibits rat mammary carcinoma, colon cancer, and nephroblastoma induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene and 12-dimethylhydrazine; it can prolong survival in spontaneously hypertensive rats prone to stroke; it also enhances learning ability in rats.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Refractory cough: a compound preparation combining Perilla fruit, Sinapis semen, and Raphani semen in proportion was administered 10 ml twice daily for 7 days as one course. In 40 cases observed, 25 were markedly effective, 15 effective, with a total efficacy rate of 100%. [Zhongyao Tongbao, 1986, 11(8):504] (2) Intestinal ascariasis: raw Perilla fruit was crushed or chewed, dosed 20–50 g for children aged 4–10 years, 50–70 g for adults, taken three times daily on an empty stomach. For abdominal pain, biliary colic, and vomiting caused by ascaris, additional administration of Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) and rice vinegar was used. In 100 cases treated, 92 expelled ascaris.
