[Overview] This herb is also known as Xuefengteng, Hongteng, Huoxueteng, and Daxueteng. It is the vine stem of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn, a leguminous plant. It is mainly produced in Guangxi and Fujian provinces, with Yunnan and Guangdong also producing it. The stems and vines are harvested in autumn and winter, with branches and leaves removed, then sawed into sections or sliced fresh and sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter and sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the liver and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies and invigorates the blood, relaxes tendons and activates collaterals.

[Applications]
1. Used for irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and amenorrhea caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis or qi and blood deficiency. For the former, it is often combined with Xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Taoren (Peach Kernel), etc.; for the latter, it is combined with Huangqi (Astragalus), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), etc.
2. Used for weakness of muscles and bones, numbness of hands and feet, paralysis of limbs, rheumatic bi syndrome, and traumatic swelling and pain. For liver and kidney deficiency with muscle and bone weakness, it is often combined with Duzhong (Eucommia), Shanzhuyu (Cornus officinalis), Sangshenzi (Mulberry fruit), etc.; for sequelae of stroke with limb weakness, numbness, and paralysis, it is combined with Huangqi, Guizhi (Cinnamon twig), Danshen, Dilong (Earthworm), etc.; for wind-cold-damp bi syndrome with limb numbness and difficulty in flexion and extension, it is combined with Qin Jiao (Gentiana macrophylla), Cangzhu (Atractylodes), Mugua (Chaenomeles), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), etc.; for traumatic injury with blood stasis and swelling pain, it can be combined with Dibiechong (Eupolyphaga), Xuduan (Dipsacus), Gusuibu (Drynaria), etc.

1. Chemical constituents: The vine contains epoxylathyrol, carotenoid glycosides, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, mangiferin, mangiferin glycosides, sakuranetin, afromosin, tetrahydroxychalcone, glycyrrhizic chalcone, medicarpin, 9-methoxy coumestrol, 3,7-dihydroxy-6-methoxyflavonol, epicatechin, protocatechuic acid, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Caulis Spatholobi has vasodilatory effects; for example, aqueous ethanol precipitate directly injected into the femoral artery of dogs showed increased arterial blood flow and decreased resistance; aqueous decoction ethanol precipitate significantly inhibited experimental platelet aggregation in rats; it has antitumor effects; tincture administered orally to rats showed significant efficacy against formaldehyde-induced arthritis; it promotes total phosphorus metabolism in mouse kidneys and uterus; it has hematopoietic effects in experimentally induced anemia in rabbits; decoction inhibits Staphylococcus aureus.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Acute enteritis: Caulis Spatholobi 60 g, decocted and taken in 2–3 divided doses daily. Sciatica: Caulis Spatholobi 250 g, Chuan Niuxi (Cyathula officinalis) and Sangjisheng (Taxillus chinensis) each 100 g, one old hen. The herbs were wrapped and cooked with the hen until the meat separated from the bone; the meat and soup were consumed continuously for 3–7 hens.
