[Overview] This product is also known as Banlongzhu. It is the young, unossified antler covered with dense velvet hair from the male deer of the Cervidae family: the sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) or the red deer (Cervus elaphus Linnaeus). The former is commonly called “Hualu Rong” (flower deer antler), mainly produced in Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, etc.; the latter is commonly called “Malurong” (red deer antler), mainly produced in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, etc. The antlers are sawed off in summer and autumn, then processed and dried in shade or by baking.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and salty; nature: warm. Channels entered: liver and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies kidney yang, nourishes essence and blood, strengthens sinews and bones, regulates Chong and Ren vessels, supports ulcer toxins.
[Applications]
1. Used for kidney yang deficiency and essence-blood insufficiency causing impotence, premature ejaculation, infertility due to uterine cold, frequent urination, enuresis, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees, cold limbs, and fatigue of the spirit. Can be used alone or soaked in wine with Dioscorea opposita (Shanyao), e.g., Lurong Wine; also combined with Panax ginseng, Morinda officinalis (Bajitian) as pills, e.g., Shenrong Guben Wan.
2. Used for liver and kidney deficiency with insufficient essence and blood causing weakness of sinews and bones, and developmental delays in children (wuchi wuruo). Commonly combined with Cornus officinalis (Shanzhuyu), Rehmannia glutinosa prepared (Shudihuang), e.g., Jiawei Dihuang Wan.
3. Used for deficiency cold in the lower burner with unstable Chong and Ren vessels causing continuous metrorrhagia and excessive leukorrhea. For continuous metrorrhagia, combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao), Pollen Typhae (Puhuang), e.g., Lurong San; for excessive leukorrhea, combined with Cornus officinalis (Shanzhuyu), Eucommia ulmoides (Duzhong).
4. Used for yang deficiency and essence-blood insufficiency causing non-healing yin sores. Commonly combined with Astragalus membranaceus (Huangqi), Angelica sinensis and Rehmannia (Danggui, Shudihuang), Cinnamomum cassia (Rougui).
[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: powder 1–2 g taken with water; or incorporated into pills or powders; can also be soaked in wine.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, heat in the blood, phlegm-heat in the lungs, and externally contracted febrile diseases with deficiency.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Deer antler velvet contains more than 17 amino acids including glycine, lysine, and arginine, with total amino acid content reaching 50.13%. It also contains cholesterol, myristic acid, cholesterol oleate, and 9 components inhibiting monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, as well as uracil, hypoxanthine, urea, creatinine, fatty acids, palmitic acid, oleic acid, and 20 trace elements including calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Red deer antler velvet also contains two antihypertensive components, one identified as lysophosphatidylcholine.
2. Pharmacological effects: Deer antler velvet can enhance physical work capacity, reduce fatigue, improve sleep, and promote appetite; deer antler essence can enhance sexual function and promote development of sexual organs, and promote overall growth; it protects the heart by strengthening myocardial contractility and treats barium chloride-induced ventricular arrhythmia in rats; deer antler extracts significantly prolong pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep time in mice, showing sedative effects; it enhances immune function and delays aging; improves protein and energy metabolism disorders and increases renal diuretic function; oral administration in rabbits increases red blood cells, hemoglobin, and reticulocytes; it increases uterine tension and rhythmic contractions in vitro; promotes wound healing, inhibits experimental gastric ulcers, enhances regeneration of chronic and poorly healing ulcers and wounds, and promotes fracture healing.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Impotence: Deer antler injection 4 ml injected into Qihai, Guanyuan, Zhongji, Qugu, and bilateral Zusanli acupoints 0.5 ml each, and 1 ml into Mingmen, once every other day for 15 treatments per course. Among 42 cases treated, 39 were effective. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1983, (11):498]
2) Cold deficiency digestive ulcers: Deer antler 40 g sliced and soaked in 500 ml white liquor, taken once morning and evening for 10 days; or 40 g soaked in rice wine, dried and powdered, 4 g once daily on an empty stomach with water for 10 days. Among 100 cases treated, 70 cured, 26 effective, 4 ineffective. [Jiangxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1992, 23(2):60]
3) Kidney deficiency diarrhea: Deer antler injection 1–2 ml intramuscularly once daily or every other day. Among 16 cases treated, 12 cured, 3 effective, 1 ineffective. [Jilin Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985, (2):22]
4) Atrioventricular conduction block: Deer antler essence injection 2 ml intramuscularly once daily. Patients with second-degree AVB or above with myocarditis additionally received penicillin 800,000 units intramuscularly twice daily; coronary heart disease with atrial fibrillation and second-degree AVB additionally received 10 mg Xinxintong three times daily and 2 Danshen tablets. Results: marked effect 60%, effective 25%, ineffective 15%, total effective rate 85%. [Zhejiang Medicine, 1988, 10(1):22]
5) Neonatal sclerema: Deer antler essence injection 1 ml intramuscularly once daily; additionally compound Danshen injection 0.5–1.0 g/kg daily diluted in 500 ml 10% glucose solution intravenously once daily for 7 days per course. Among 20 cases treated, 10 cured, 5 markedly improved, 5 died. [Fujian Medical Journal, 1981, (1):30]
