[Overview] This item is also known as Baoyi, Renbao, Taiyi, or Placenta. It is the placenta from a healthy human.
Collected from fresh placentas of healthy postpartum women, the amniotic membrane and umbilical cord are removed, then repeatedly washed until blood is cleaned off, steamed or briefly boiled in boiling water, and then dried.
[Properties] Taste is sweet and salty; nature is warm; it enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Warms the Kidney and replenishes essence; benefits Qi and nourishes blood.
[Applications]
1. Used for Kidney deficiency with essence depletion, impotence, spermatorrhea, soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, infertility. Can be cooked fresh for consumption or dried and powdered for oral use; or combined with ginseng, cooked rehmannia, tortoise shell, Eucommia, etc. Ten formulas include Heche Dazao Wan (河车大造丸).
2. Used for Qi and blood deficiency, emaciation and weakness, shortness of breath with spontaneous sweating, sallow complexion, palpitations and shortness of breath, postpartum insufficient lactation. Used alone or combined with ginseng, astragalus, angelica, cooked rehmannia, etc. Currently commonly used clinically to tonify and treat aplastic anemia and leukopenia.
3. Used for deficiency-type asthma and chronic cough due to Lung and Kidney insufficiency; can be dried and powdered for single use or combined with ginseng powder or gecko powder. This item can treat pulmonary tuberculosis with low-grade fever and cough, often prepared as a paste with Stemona, Bletilla, and Codonopsis plus rock sugar.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: stew and eat fresh placenta, one piece, removing blood vessels and washing clean, stew thoroughly before eating; dry and powder, 2–3 g; or prepare as a paste.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of exterior pathogenic factors and excess syndromes; use with caution in spleen deficiency with dampness and poor appetite.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Human placenta contains various antibodies and interferons as well as multiple hormones such as gonadotropins, prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone, oxytocin-like substances, and estrone; it also contains valuable enzymes, erythropoietin, phospholipids, and polysaccharides.
2. Pharmacological effects: The placenta has physiological functions of hormone secretion, including secretion of human chorionic gonadotropin; it promotes development of mammary glands, uterus, vagina, ovaries, and testes; decoctions of human placenta significantly increase the proportion of peripheral blood T lymphocytes in mice; it antagonizes the decrease in thymus index and T lymphocyte ratio and the expansion of thymic medullary area caused by prednisone in mice; oral placenta and amniotic fluid enhance morphine analgesia in rats; placenta extracts prolong in vitro recalcification time, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time, showing anticoagulant effects; it provides protective effects against death caused by endotoxins of Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium, and Shigella flexneri and against endotoxin-induced damage in rats.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Aplastic anemia: Using 4–5 month normal fetus from water bag induced abortion, prepared as 30% whole fetal solution, 2 ml per vial, intramuscular or acupoint injection, once daily or every other day, 2 vials each time, treatment duration 1–12 months. Among 24 cases treated, 10 were basically cured, 5 improved, 7 markedly improved, 2 ineffective; total effective rate 91.7%. [Chinese Journal of Internal Medicine, 1984, 23(9):564]
2) Migraine: Using roasted whole scorpion, uncaria, and human placenta each 18 g, ground into fine powder and encapsulated, each capsule containing 0.3 g of raw herbs, taken orally three times daily, 0.9 g each time. After pain relief, dosage adjusted to 0.9 g daily or every other day. Headache gradually relieved within 12 hours after medication, significantly relieved or disappeared within 48 hours; one-year follow-up of 18 cases showed only 1 case relapsed twice. 3) Juvenile myopia: Placenta tissue fluid injected at acupoints, main acupoint ear needle: eye; auxiliary body acupoints: Sanyinjiao; wrist and ankle needle: Shang 1. Each time, 1 virtual unit injected at main and auxiliary acupoints (bilateral), 0.5 ml placenta tissue fluid injected each time, 3 times per week, 3 times as one course, interval between courses 4–5 days, second course possible. 4) Perennial allergic rhinitis: Oral human placenta, 3 capsules each time (each capsule containing 0.3 g pure powder), twice daily, one month as one course. Among 36 cases treated, recent efficacy: markedly effective 22 cases, effective 10 cases, ineffective 4 cases; marked efficacy rate 61.11%, total effective rate 88.89%. Long-term efficacy (partial): 1 case no relapse for 1 year (medicated 3 months), 3 cases basically no relapse, only mild symptoms when catching cold; other cases relapsed shortly after stopping medication but symptoms were milder.
