[Overview] This herb is also known as Baihe or Garlic Brain Potato. It is the fleshy scale leaf of plants from the Liliaceae family: Lilium lancifolium Thunb., Lilium brownii P.E.Brown var. viridulum Baker, or Lilium pumilum DC. It is found throughout most regions of China, mainly produced in Hunan and Zhejiang provinces. Harvested in autumn after the stems and leaves wither, the bulbs are dug up, cleaned, peeled to obtain the scales, briefly blanched in boiling water, then thinly spread and dried in the sun or by baking.
[Properties] Taste: sweet, slightly bitter; nature: slightly cold. Enters the Heart and Lung meridians.
[Actions] Nourishes yin and moistens the lungs; clears the heart and calms the spirit.
[Applications]
1. Used for lung yin deficiency with dryness or chronic cough with blood in sputum. For dry cough with little phlegm and blood due to lung yin deficiency with heat, often combined with Farfarae Flos (Kuan Dong Hua), as in Baihe Gao (Lily Bulb Syrup). For prolonged dry cough with sore throat and loss of voice, combined with Glehniae Radix (Sha Shen), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Chuan Bei Mu), and Pear Peel. For pulmonary tuberculosis with chronic cough and hemoptysis, tidal fever, night sweats, flushed cheeks, and irritability, combined with Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, and Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Men Dong), as in Baihe Gujin Tang.
2. Used for yin deficiency with heat disturbing the heart spirit, causing palpitations and insomnia, often combined with Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Men Dong), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suan Zao Ren), and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Dan Shen). For late-stage febrile diseases damaging heart yin with residual heat causing mental confusion, restlessness, and unknown discomfort (called Baihe disease), often combined with Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu) and Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di), as in Baihe Zhi Mu Tang and Baihe Di Huang Tang. For heart yin deficiency with heart-kidney disharmony causing irritability, insomnia, forgetfulness, excessive dreaming, palpitations, afternoon tidal fever, and night sweats, can be steamed with honey or combined with Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian) and Colla Corii Asini (E Jiao).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into pills or powders; can also be steamed or cooked into congee. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically.
[Cautions] This herb is cold in nature; therefore, it is contraindicated in wind-cold cough or diarrhea due to middle-jiao cold.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include starch, protein, fat, sugars, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and trace amounts of colchicine.
2. Pharmacological effects: aqueous and alcohol extracts show significant antitussive and expectorant effects in experimental animals and can counteract histamine-induced allergic asthma; aqueous extracts also have tonic, anti-hypoxic, sedative, and anti-allergic effects; the colchicine content exhibits estrogen-like activity, inhibits gout attacks, suppresses mitosis of cancer cells, and prevents cancer cell proliferation.
3. Clinical reports: (1) In the polyuric phase of epidemic hemorrhagic fever: used 60 g Bulbus Lilii, 60 g Polygonati Rhizoma (Huang Jing), 3 g Ginseng (prepared separately), 6 g honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix (Zhi Gan Cao), one dose daily as decoction for 3 days per course, combined with black rice porridge. Treated 205 cases with a total effective rate of 98%. [Shaanxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1993,(4):157] (2) Elderly women with vulvar itching: used 60 g Bulbus Lilii, 15 g Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), 30 g Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen), decocted and used for fumigation and sitz bath for 30–40 minutes once daily, decoction could be used 2–3 times. Treated 22 cases: 12 cured, 7 improved, 3 ineffective, with an effective rate of 86%. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1994,13(3):139]
