[Overview] This herb is also known as Gouqi red fruit, Gouqi fruit, Jin Gouqi, and Gouqi bean. It is the mature fruit of Lycium barbarum L., a plant of the Solanaceae family. The main production area is Ningxia, with additional production in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in summer and autumn when it turns red, then dried with hot air and the fruit stalks removed; alternatively, it is air-dried until the skin wrinkles, then sun-dried and the stalks removed.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the liver and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Nourishes the liver and kidneys, benefits essence and brightens the eyes, moistens the lungs.
[Applications]
1. Used for signs of liver and kidney yin deficiency. If liver and kidney yin are deficient with hyperactive deficient yang causing dizziness and vertigo, it is often combined with mulberry leaf, chrysanthemum, oyster shell, etc.; if liver and kidney yin deficiency causes eye malnourishment with symptoms of dry, painful eyes, photophobia with tearing, and blurred vision, it is often combined with chrysanthemum and rehmannia, as in the formula Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (杞菊地黄丸); if liver and kidney yin deficiency leads to liver malnourishment and abnormal liver qi flow with hypochondriac dull pain, dry throat and mouth, red tongue with little coating, it is often combined with adenophora, ophiopogon, angelica, and toosendan, as in the formula Yi Guan Jian (一贯煎).
2. Used for internal heat causing excessive thirst; can be chewed alone or brewed as tea; or combined with raw rehmannia, astragalus, asparagus root, Chinese yam, etc.
3. Used for yin deficiency cough; often combined with anemarrhena, fritillaria, ophiopogon, stemona, etc.
Additionally, for kidney yang deficiency, impotence, and seminal emission, it is used together with aconite and cinnamon to allow “yang to be assisted by yin and generate endless transformation”; externally, Fructus Lycii can also treat carbuncles, swelling and pain, scrofula ulceration, and frostbite.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into pills, powders, ointments, or medicinal wines.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen deficiency with loose stools.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Ningxia Fructus Lycii contains betaine, atropine, lyciamine, physalins, flavonoids, scopolamine, carotene, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin A, polysaccharides, taurine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and trace elements.
2. Pharmacological effects: Lycium polysaccharides exhibit bidirectional regulation on mouse T and B lymphocyte cytokines, showing inhibitory effects at high doses and stimulatory effects at low doses; Fructus Lycii extract significantly inhibits lipid peroxidation in mouse liver, increases glutathione peroxidase and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activities in blood; acetone extracts have antimutagenic properties and can block mutagenesis; it lowers blood cholesterol and inhibits experimental atherosclerosis formation in rabbits; Lycium polysaccharides protect against carbon tetrachloride-induced lipid peroxidation liver damage in mice; decoctions promote hematopoietic function in normal mice, increasing white blood cell counts.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Primary liver cancer: oral administration of Lycium polysaccharides 50 mg twice daily for over 2 months in 20 cases improved appetite, sleep, mental state, immune function, prolonged survival with an average survival of 11 months, and reduced chemotherapy side effects. [Chinese Journal of Pharmacology and Clinical, 1990,(6):38] 2) Male infertility: chewing 15 g Fructus Lycii nightly for 1 month, followed by another month after semen normalized, abstaining from sexual activity during treatment; among 42 cases, 23 normalized after one course, 10 after two courses, 6 cases with azoospermia showed no effect, and 3 cases had poor efficacy. [New Chinese Medicine, 1988,(2):20] 3) Pregnancy vomiting: 50 g Fructus Lycii and 50 g Scutellaria baicalensis placed in a covered jar, infused with boiling water and drunk frequently when warm; after finishing, re-infused with boiling water as needed. Among 200 cases treated, the effective rate was 95%. [Jilin Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988,(1):28] 4) Chronic atrophic gastritis: Ningxia Fructus Lycii washed, dried, crushed, and divided into 20 g doses, chewed twice daily on an empty stomach for 2 months per course; among 20 cases, 15 showed marked improvement, 5 effective. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987,(2):92]
