[Overview] This product is also known as Abalone Shell, Sea Haliotis, and Qianli Shell. It is the shell of abalones from the family Haliotidae, including Haliotis diversicolor Reeve, Haliotis discus hannai Ino, Haliotis ovina Gmelin, Haliotis ruber (Leach), Haliotis asinina Linnaeus, or Haliotis laevigata (Donovan). The main production areas are coastal regions of Guangdong, Hainan, Shandong, Fujian, and Liaoning provinces. It is harvested in summer and autumn, with the flesh removed, then cleaned and sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste: salty; nature: cold. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Calms Liver Yang, suppresses hyperactivity, clears the Liver, and improves vision.

[Applications]
1. Used for headache, dizziness, tinnitus, and eye distension, especially suitable for conditions caused by Liver and Kidney Yin deficiency with Liver Yang rising. If Liver Yang is hyperactive with vigorous Liver fire, presenting with red face, irritability, thirst, bitter taste, and yellow coating, it should be combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Prunella spike, Gardenia fruit, Cassia seed, etc. If Liver Yang is excessive causing Liver wind with convulsions and spasms, it should be combined with Gastrodia, Uncaria, Silkworm, and Antelope horn. If pathogenic heat injures Yin causing muscle spasms, twitching of hands and feet, dizziness, it is often combined with Rehmannia root, White Peony root, Lycium fruit, Turtle shell, and Oyster shell.
2. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes, corneal opacity, and blurred vision. For Liver fire rising causing red, swollen, painful eyes, combined with Cassia seed and Chrysanthemum flower. For wind-heat eye diseases with corneal opacity, combined with Schizonepeta, Equisetum, Buddleja flower, Polygonum, Mulberry leaf, Chrysanthemum flower, etc. For chronic blurred vision due to Liver blood deficiency, often combined with Cuscuta seed and prepared Rehmannia root. For cataracts, use this product powdered with Atractylodes, cooked inside pig liver, then consume the liver and drink the juice.
Additionally, calcined Concha Haliotidis has astringent, antacid, analgesic, hemostatic, febrifuge, and diuretic effects, and can be used for acid regurgitation and stomach pain, traumatic bleeding, bone steaming fever, and urinary disorders.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 5–15 g, crushed and decocted first; or used in pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, water-fly eye drops. For calming and clearing the Liver, use raw; for external eye application, use calcined.

[Cautions] Not suitable for those with Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Concha Haliotidis contains calcium carbonate, organic matter, and small amounts of magnesium, iron, silicates, sulfates, phosphates, chlorides, trace iodine, and various amino acids.
2. Pharmacological effects: The hydrolysate of the inner layer of Haliotis diversicolor shell has certain hepatoprotective effects, reducing serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (ALT). The shell shows significant hypoxia tolerance effects, increases perfusion in isolated mouse lungs, and dilates tracheal and bronchial smooth muscle. Acidic extracts have demonstrated significant anticoagulant effects in in vivo and in vitro coagulation tests in rabbits.
