[Overview] This herb is also known as Small Red Bean, Red Bean, Red Small Bean, and Du Red Bean. It is the mature seed of the leguminous plants Phaseolus calcaratus Roxb. or Phaseolus angularis Willd. It is found throughout most regions of China, mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and other provinces. The whole plant is harvested in autumn when the fruit is mature but unopened, then dried in the sun. The seeds are threshed, impurities removed, and then dried again.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and sour; nature: neutral. Enters the Spleen, Heart, and Small Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Promotes urination to reduce edema, clears damp-heat, detoxifies and discharges pus.
[Applications]
1. Used for edema, beriberi, and swelling of the feet. It can be used alone as a decoction, eaten as beans or drunk as juice, or combined with Poria (Fu Ling), Polyporus (Zhu Ling), Alisma (Ze Xie), etc. For generalized edema with breathlessness and inability to lie down or sit, it is combined with Mulberry Bark (Sang Pi), Perilla (Zi Su), and other herbs to promote urination. For sudden abdominal edema (ascites), it can be combined with Imperata cylindrica root (Bai Mao Gen). Currently, it is used to treat malnutrition edema, chronic nephritis with dampness, and ascites due to liver cirrhosis by cooking with carp or black fish.
2. Used for damp-heat jaundice and strangury. For early-stage jaundice due to typhoid with stasis heat and mild yellowing accompanied by chills and fever, it is often combined with Ephedra (Ma Huang), Forsythia (Lian Qiao), and Semen Phaseoli in formulas such as Ma Huang Lian Qiao Chi Xiao Dou Tang. For more severe damp-heat, it is combined with Artemisia capillaris (Yin Chen), Gardenia (Shan Zhi), and Rhubarb (Da Huang). For treating hot strangury and bloody strangury, it is combined with Akebia (Mu Tong), Imperata cylindrica root (Bai Mao Gen), and Dianthus (Qu Mai).
3. Used for toxic sores, carbuncles, erysipelas, and mumps. For non-ulcerated mastitis or mumps, the herb powder can be mixed with egg white, honey, or rice vinegar and applied topically. For erysipelas and ulcerated sores, decoctions of this herb are used for external washing.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–30 g; or incorporated into pills or powders; can also be cooked into porridge or rice dishes. External use: appropriate amount, ground fresh and applied topically or used as a decoction for washing.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with fluid injury.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Semen Phaseoli contains protein (mainly globulin), fat, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, ash, calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, etc. It also contains polysaccharides and triterpenoid saponins.
2. Pharmacological effects: A trypsin inhibitor isolated from Semen Phaseoli shows strong irreversible competitive inhibition of trypsin; in vitro, it significantly inhibits human sperm and acrosomal enzymes.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Epidemic mumps: Using 100 g Semen Phaseoli powder mixed with appropriate amount of duck egg white to form a paste, applied on gauze and placed on the affected area, changed every 5 hours. In 45 cases treated, all were cured; 19 cases showed marked improvement with swelling and fever reduced within 24 hours, 26 cases within 48 hours. 2) Intractable hiccup: 20 seeds of Semen Phaseoli placed inside a pig gallbladder, dried under eaves, then ground into fine powder. 2 g taken twice daily with hot water. Among 26 cases, 22 cured within 2 days, 4 cured within 4 days. [Shandong Medicine, 1980,(9):56]
3) Chronic thrombocytopenic purpura: 50 g Semen Phaseoli, 30 g peanut with skin, 20 g rock sugar, cooked with appropriate water by steaming until beans are soft; eat residue and drink soup once daily for 30 days per course, 2–3 courses possible. Among 50 cases, 16 cured, 30 improved, 4 ineffective; total effective rate 92%. [Jiangxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1993,24(6):43]
4) Pediatric subdural effusion: Semen Phaseoli ground into fine powder for promoting urination, mixed with warm water to paste, applied on shaved and cleaned anterior fontanel and surrounding area at 1 cm thickness, covered with gauze, removed after hardening, once daily. In 12 cases treated, all cured. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1992,11(3):55]
