[Overview] This herb is also known as Chun Sharen, Suo Sharen, and Suo Sha Mi. It is the mature fruit of plants from the Zingiberaceae family: Amomum villosum Lour. (Yangchun Sharen), Amomum villosum Lour. var. xanthioides T.L.Wu et Senjen (Green-shelled Sharen), or Amomum longiligulare T.L.Wu (Hainan Sharen). Yangchun Sharen is mainly produced in Yunnan and Guangdong, with Fujian and Guangxi also producing it; Green-shelled Sharen is mainly produced in Yunnan and partly imported, known as imported Sharen, Western Sharen, or Suo Sharen, sourced from Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia; Hainan Sharen is mainly produced in Hainan and Guangdong. The fruits are harvested in summer and autumn when they change from bright red to purplish red, then sun-dried or dried at low temperature.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Promotes the movement of qi and transforms dampness, awakens the spleen and stomach, calms the fetus.

[Applications]
1. Used for dampness obstructing the middle burner, qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach, and spleen and stomach deficiency causing epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, poor appetite, and nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. For dampness obstructing the middle burner, it is often combined with Magnolia officinalis (Houpo) and Atractylodes (Cangzhu); for spleen and stomach qi stagnation, it is often combined with Aucklandia (Muxiang), Citrus aurantium (Zhishi), and Atractylodes (Baizhu), as in Xiangsha Zhizhu Wan; for spleen and stomach deficiency, it is often combined with Ginseng, Atractylodes (Baizhu), and Poria (Fuling); if accompanied by food stagnation, Hawthorn (Shanzha), Raphanus (Laifuzi), and Chicken Gizzard Membrane (Jineijin) may be added; if spleen and stomach cold with abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting, it can be combined with dried ginger (Ganjiang) and Aconite (Fuzi).
2. Used for nausea and vomiting due to spleen deficiency and qi stagnation during pregnancy, and restless fetus; it can be combined with Atractylodes (Baizhu), Perilla Stem (Sujing), and Agastache (Huoxiang). For restless fetus due to kidney deficiency, it can be combined with Eucommia (Duzhong), Mulberry Mistletoe (Sangjisheng), and Dipsacus (Xuduan).
Additionally, this herb is often included in tonic formulas to promote qi movement and strengthen the stomach, preventing the greasy nature of tonics from impairing the stomach.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 3–6 g, added near the end of decoction; or used in pills or powders.

[Cautions] Not suitable for prolonged decoction. Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with heat.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Yangchun Sharen seeds contain volatile oils, mainly acetyl borneol ester, camphor, limonene, bornyl acetate, and nearly thirty other compounds; also contains saponins and various trace elements. Green-shelled Sharen fruits contain volatile oils with main components including nerolidol, camphor, acetyl borneol, linalool, borneol, camphene, limonene, and also contain sedative 2-phenylethanol glycosides such as cardamomin, as well as multiple trace elements. Hainan Sharen fruits contain volatile oils with main components including α-pinene, β-pinene, cineole, para-menthane derivatives, linalool, limonene, bornyl acetate, camphor, nerolidol, and others, plus various trace elements.
2. Pharmacological effects: Sharen has anti-stress ulcer effects and can reduce gastric acid secretion; seed extracts significantly enhance rhythmic contractions of isolated guinea pig ileum and increase contraction amplitude; it has significant analgesic effects; it markedly inhibits ADP-induced platelet aggregation.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Infantile indigestion: Sharen and roasted Atractylodes (Cangzhu) 200 g each, fried Plantago seed (Cheqianzi) 100 g; all ground into fine powder. Dosage: under 6 months old, 1–1.5 g per dose; 6 months to 1 year, 1.5–2 g; 1–3 years, 2–3 g, three times daily. Treated over 200 cases of simple infantile indigestion or with mild dehydration, all cured within 7 days. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1982,(3):191]
2) Pediatric autumn diarrhea: Sharen 5 g, Chicken Gizzard Membrane (Jineijin) 10 g, white sugar 15 g. Chicken Gizzard Membrane fried until yellow and foamy, then ground with other herbs into fine powder. Dosage varies by age, 2–6 g per dose, three times daily with warm water for 3 days.
