[Overview] This product is the horn of Saiga tatarica L., a member of the Bovidae family. Most of the Lingyangjiao used to calm the liver wind is imported from Russia and other countries, with a small amount produced in Xinjiang, China. It can be harvested year-round; after capture, the horn is sawed off at the base, then sliced thinly or ground into powder for use.

[Properties] Salty in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Heart meridians.

[Actions] Calms the liver and extinguishes wind, clears the liver and brightens the eyes, cools the blood and detoxifies.

[Applications]
1. Used for convulsions and spasms. This herb is especially suitable for liver wind stirred by extreme heat, such as in warm diseases with high fever, irritability, delirium, convulsions, and spasms. It is often combined with Gou Teng (Uncaria), Sang Ye (Mulberry leaf), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhu Ru (Bamboo shavings), etc., as in Lingyangjiao Gou Teng Tang (羚角钩藤汤). For extreme heat causing mania or delirium, it can be combined with Shui Niu Jiao (Water Buffalo Horn), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), etc. For pediatric cold-heat convulsions, it can be ground into powder and taken with breast milk or decocted with Deng Xin Cao (Juncus) and Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice). For epilepsy attacks with loss of consciousness and convulsions, it is combined with Gou Teng, Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Quan Xie (Scorpion), Wu Gong (Centipede), etc.
2. Used for headache and dizziness caused by liver yang rising. Commonly combined with Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Gou Teng, etc. If complicated by phlegm-heat, it is combined with Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Zhu Ru, etc. For liver fire exuberance, it is often combined with Xia Ku Cao (Prunellae Spica), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), etc. Currently, it is frequently used clinically to treat headaches and dizziness caused by hypertension.
3. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes, corneal opacity, and blurred vision. For eye redness and swelling caused by liver fire rising, it is often combined with Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix), Cao Jue Ming (Cassiae Semen), Huang Qin, etc. For blurred vision due to liver deficiency with heat, it is combined with Shi Hu (Dendrobii Herba), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Sheng/Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Qing Xiang Zi (Celosiae Semen), etc.
4. Used for bleeding due to blood heat and rash in warm diseases. For sudden vomiting of blood caused by liver fire attacking the stomach, it can be combined with Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), as in Lingyangjiao Yin (羚羊角饮). For nasal bleeding with dark purple blood and irritability, it is combined with San Qi (Notoginseng Radix). For intestinal wind bleeding, it is combined with Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Qin, as in Lingyangjiao Wan (羚羊角丸). For rash in warm diseases with high fever and irritability, it is often combined with Shi Gao, Zhi Mu, Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba), etc. Additionally, powdered Lingyangjiao mixed with water and applied topically can treat carbuncles and severe swellings.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 1–3 g; should be decocted separately for more than 2 hours; juice or powder, 0.3–0.6 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount of juice applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of spleen deficiency with chronic convulsions.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include keratin, calcium phosphate, insoluble inorganic salts, various amino acids, and phospholipids such as lecithin, cephalin, sphingomyelin, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylinositol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Lingyangjiao decoction significantly antagonizes fever induced by vaccines in rabbits; it has a central nervous system inhibitory effect and sedative action in experimental animals; Lingyangjiao and its analogues antagonize convulsions induced by three types of central nervous system stimulants: analeptics, nitroprusside, and aristolochic acid; its decoction excites isolated rabbit duodenum and estrogen-treated uterus, estrous cycle uterus, and pregnant uterus; extracts have antihypertensive effects in experimental animals.
3. Clinical reports on elderly patients with systolic hypertension: oral administration of Lingyangjiao powder, 0.3 g twice daily for 28 days per course. Among 40 cases treated, clinical symptoms were cured in 3 cases (7.5%), markedly effective in 11 cases (27.5%), effective in 20 cases (50%), and ineffective in 6 cases (15%), with a total effective rate of 85%. The antihypertensive effect was markedly effective in 10 cases (25%), effective in 23 cases (57.5%), and ineffective in 7 cases (17.5%), with a total effective rate of 82.5%.
