[Overview] This herb is also known as Nanxing. It is the tuber of plants from the Araceae family: Arisaema erubescens (Will.) Schott, Arisaema heterophyllum Bl., or Arisaema amurense Maxim. Rhizoma Arisaematis is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan provinces; Arisaema heterophyllum is found in Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi provinces; Arisaema amurense is mainly produced in Northeast China, Shandong, and Hebei provinces. The tubers are harvested in autumn and winter when the stems and leaves wither, with roots and outer skin removed, then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, warm in nature, and toxic. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Dries dampness and transforms phlegm, dispels wind and relieves spasms, dissipates nodules and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for damp-phlegm and cold-phlegm syndromes. For damp-phlegm obstructing the lungs with cough and copious sputum, chest fullness, often combined with Pinellia (Banxia) and Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), as in Yufen Wan (Jade Powder Pill); if combined with Scutellaria (Huangqin), Pinellia (Banxia), and Concha Meretricis (Haigai Ke), it can treat phlegm-heat cough, as in Qingqi Huatan Wan (Clear Qi and Transform Phlegm Pill).
2. Used for wind-phlegm syndromes. For wind-phlegm disturbing the head causing headache and dizziness, often combined with Pinellia (Banxia) and Gastrodia (Tianma); for stroke with unconsciousness, profuse phlegm, facial deviation, hemiplegia caused by wind-phlegm blocking the channels, often combined with raw Aconite (Sheng Fuzi), raw Sichuan Aconite (Sheng Chuanwu), and raw Aucklandia (Sheng Muxiang), as in Sansheng Yin (Three Raw Decoction); for facial deviation, powdered Rhizoma Arisaematis mixed with ginger juice is spread on paper and applied to the affected side, as in Tiannanxing Gao (Rhizoma Arisaematis Paste); for epilepsy with convulsions, combined with Pinellia (Banxia), Scorpion (Quanxie), and Silkworm (Jiangcan); for tetanus with opisthotonos and trismus, combined with Saposhnikovia (Fangfeng), White Aconite (Baifuzi), and Gastrodia (Tianma).
3. Used for carbuncles, swellings and toxins, scrofula, mumps, traumatic bruises and swelling, and snake bites. Rhizoma Arisaematis powder or juice ground with vinegar is applied topically; for severe heat toxin, combined with Trichosanthes root (Tianhuafen), Rhubarb (Dahuang), and Phellodendron (Huangbai); for early scrofula, combined with raw Aconite (Sheng Wutou) and Fritillaria (Beimu) powder for topical application; for traumatic bruises and swelling, combined with Pinellia (Banxia) and Aquilaria (Jiangxiang) powder for topical application.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g, generally used after processing; or used in pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, applied topically as juice ground with vinegar or as powder mixed for topical application.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency dry cough, excessive heat, or blood deficiency with wind movement. Use with caution in pregnant women and children. Raw herb should be used cautiously internally; accidental ingestion of raw Rhizoma Arisaematis can cause poisoning.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Rhizoma Arisaematis contains various alkaloids and cyclic dipeptides such as L-prolyl-L-valine anhydride, L-valyl-L-valine anhydride, L-valyl-L-alanine anhydride, β-carboline, thymine, as well as pinellia alkaloids, carotene glycosides, β-sitosterol, palmitic acid, multiple amino acids, and inorganic elements.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Rhizoma Arisaematis exhibit sedative, analgesic, and anticonvulsant effects; decoctions administered orally to rabbits show good expectorant effects; fresh Rhizoma Arisaematis water-alcohol precipitate inhibits cancer cell growth.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Coronary heart disease: Pills made from raw Rhizoma Arisaematis and raw Pinellia, 3.5 g per dose, three times daily, treated 50 cases. Results: total effective rate for angina pectoris was 71%, ECG improvement rate was 30.8%. Also showed expectorant, antihypertensive, and lipid-lowering effects in patients with hypertension and hyperlipidemia. [Zhongcaoyao, 1989, (4):10]
2) Pediatric excessive salivation and cough: Equal amounts of processed Rhizoma Arisaematis and raw Puhuang ground into fine powder, mixed with vinegar into cakes, applied to Yongquan acupoint, changed every 12 hours. Treated 132 cases: 118 cured, 11 improved, 3 ineffective. [Sichuan Zhongyi, 1986, (10):13]
3) Oral ulcers: Equal amounts of Rhizoma Arisaematis and Evodia fruit ground into fine powder, mixed with aged vinegar into a paste, applied to Yongquan acupoints on both feet. Treated 64 cases: 62 cured. [Shandong Zhongyi Zazhi, 1998, 17(1):39]
4) Facial neuritis: 40 g each of processed Rhizoma Arisaematis and Saposhnikovia soaked in water, decocted briefly over high heat, sweat collected and taken once before sleep. Patients rested under covers to induce sweating. Treated 35 cases: 30 cured after one treatment, 4 after two treatments, 1 improved; no relapse, cure rate 97.1%. [Shanxi Zhongyi, 1994, 10(4):28]
5) Purulent skin infections: 600 ml vinegar reduced to 200 ml, mixed with 300 g fine Rhizoma Arisaematis powder into a paste. Before use, lesions cleaned and disinfected with 75% alcohol, then Rhizoma Arisaematis vinegar paste applied and covered with appropriately sized transparent adhesive tape, changed once daily.
