[Overview] This herb is also known as Bai Doukou, Duo Gu, Ke Kou, and Kou Mi. It is the mature fruit of the Zingiberaceae family plants Amomum kravanh Pierre ex Gagnep (commonly called “Original Doukou”) or Amomum compactum Soland ex Maton (commonly called “Indonesian Bai Doukou”). The former is mainly produced in Thailand; the latter is mainly produced in Indonesia. Both are cultivated in Hainan and Yunnan provinces of China.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung, Spleen, and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Resolves dampness and dissipates fullness, promotes qi circulation and warms the middle burner, stimulates appetite and aids digestion.

[Applications]
1. Used for dampness obstructing the middle burner, chest and epigastric fullness and oppression, abdominal distention and pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Commonly combined with Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Huo Xiang (Agastache), Chen Pi (Citrus Peel), etc. For cold-damp qi stagnation with abdominal fullness and pain, it can be combined with Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Mu Xiang (Aucklandia), etc. For spleen qi deficiency with qi stagnation and epigastric distention and poor appetite, it can be combined with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Sha Ren, Chen Pi, etc. For spleen and stomach deficiency cold with poor appetite, it can be combined with Bai Zhu and Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), as in the formula Bai Doukou Wan.
2. Used for nausea and vomiting, especially cold-damp vomiting, often combined with Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Huo Xiang, Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), etc., as in Bai Doukou Tang. For stomach cold vomiting, it can be combined with Gan Jiang and Ban Xia. For treating pregnancy vomiting, it can be combined with Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings) and Sheng Jiang.
3. Used for early-stage damp-warm febrile disease. If symptoms include low-grade fever without sweating, chest oppression without hunger, white tongue coating, and no thirst, indicating damp predominates over heat, it is often combined with Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel), Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), Hua Shi (Talcum), etc., as in San Ren Tang. If fever is unresolved, yellow tongue coating, and red urine, indicating heat predominates over dampness, it is combined with Huang Qin (Scutellaria) and Hua Shi, as in Huang Qin Hua Shi Tang.

[Dosage and Administration] Taken internally: decocted in water, 3–6 g, added near the end of decoction; or used in pills or powders.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with blood dryness.

1. Chemical constituents include volatile oils, mainly 1,8-cineole, β-pinene, α-pinene, eugenyl, bornyl acetate, α-terpineol, linalool, as well as 4-terpinene, valencene, γ-gurjunene, α-selinene, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: The volatile oil enhances the therapeutic effect of low-dose dihydrostreptomycin in experimental tuberculosis in guinea pigs.
