[Overview] This herb is also known as Tiger Thistle, Spiny Thistle, and Wild Thistle. It is the aerial parts and root of Cirsium japonicum Fisch. ex DC., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is distributed in Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and other regions. The aerial parts are harvested during the flowering season in summer and autumn, used fresh or dried; the roots are dug up in autumn, washed, and dried.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Liver and Spleen meridians.
[Actions] Cools the blood and stops bleeding; disperses blood stasis and reduces swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for various bleeding syndromes caused by blood heat, either alone or combined with other hemostatic herbs. For vomiting blood and coughing blood, often combined with Small Thistle (Xiao Ji), Biota leaf (Ce Bai Ye), Rhubarb (Da Huang), etc., as in the formula Shi Hui San (Ten Partially-Charred Substances Powder); for lung abscess with coughing blood, combined with Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), Pollen Typhae (Pu Huang), Mulberry root bark (Sang Bai Pi), etc., as in Da Ji San (Great Thistle Powder); for nosebleed, combined with Lotus Rhizome Node (Ou Jie), Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), honey, etc., as in Ou Jie Yin (Lotus Node Drink); for bloody stools, combined with Sanguisorba (Di Yu), Sophora flower (Huai Hua), Schizonepeta spike (Jing Jie Sui), etc.; for hematuria and bloody urine, combined with Small Thistle, Imperata root (Bai Mao Gen), Pollen Typhae, etc.; for metrorrhagia, combined with Donkey-hide gelatin (E Jiao), Palm charcoal, and Blood residue charcoal.
2. Used for heat toxin-induced abscesses and sores, both internally and externally. Used alone or combined with Lonicera japonica (Jin Yin Hua), Forsythia suspensa (Lian Qiao), Taraxacum mongolicum (Pu Gong Ying), etc.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–10 g; fresh herb can be used up to 30–60 g; or juice extracted by pounding. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied topically or fresh herb pounded and applied. For cooling blood, stopping bleeding, dispersing blood stasis, and reducing swelling, the herb can be used raw; stir-frying to charcoal enhances hemostatic effect.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains alkaloids and volatile oils. The root contains dandelion acetate sterol ester, stigmasterol, α- and β-amyrin, β-sitosterol, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Daji has hemostatic effects; alcohol extracts have antihypertensive effects; ethanol tincture inhibits Mycobacterium tuberculosis; aqueous extracts show significant inhibition of herpes simplex virus.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Pulmonary tuberculosis: 100 g dried Daji root decocted in water, taken as one dose daily in two divided doses. Adding 30–60 g lean meat or 30 g pig lung per dose improves efficacy. In 26 cases treated, 4 cured, 17 improved, 5 ineffective. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987; 22(11):489] 2) Urticaria: Fresh Daji washed with water, epidermis and core scraped off, middle fleshy layer used, 100 g per dose decocted and taken orally. In 44 cases of wind-heat type urticaria, 34 cured after 1–3 doses, 8 cured after 4–5 doses, 2 ineffective. [Primary Medical Journal, 1982, (5):39] 3) Intramuscular induration: Daji powder mixed with starch 1:1, made into a paste with boiling water. The paste is spread on 3–4 layers of gauze about 0.5 cm thick. When cooled to 40–42°C, applied to affected area, covered with oil gauze or plastic film to prevent drying. Over 500 cases treated, all effective. [Journal of Practical Medicine, 1985; (2):40]
