[Overview] This herb is also known as Shanyu Rou, Shi Zao’er, and Yao Zao. It is the mature fruit of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc., a plant of the Cornaceae family. It is distributed in Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Shandong, Anhui, Zhejiang, and other regions, often cultivated by introduction. The fruit is harvested in late autumn to early winter when the peel turns red. It is then gently heated over low fire or briefly blanched in boiling water, the seeds promptly removed, and dried in the sun or by baking.

[Properties] Taste: sour and astringent; nature: slightly warm. Enters the Liver and Kidney channels.

[Actions] Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys; astringes essence and stops leakage.

[Applications]
1. Used for soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, bone steaming, and tidal fever due to Liver and Kidney deficiency. Often combined with Rehmannia, Moutan Cortex, and Chinese Yam, as in the formula Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). If accompanied by fear of cold, cold limbs, or urinary difficulty or frequency, indicating Kidney Yang deficiency, it is commonly combined with Cinnamon Bark and Aconite, as in Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill).
2. Used for impotence, premature ejaculation, enuresis, and uterine bleeding. For impotence and premature ejaculation, often combined with Morinda, Cistanche, Rosa laevigata, and Psoralea; for frequent urination or incontinence in the elderly, combined with Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Alpinia oxyphylla; for uterine bleeding with lumbar soreness, combined with Dragon Bone, Oyster Shell, Astragalus, Palm Carbon, and Rubia, as in Gu Chong Tang.
3. Used for Spleen and Kidney deficiency causing early morning diarrhea; combined with Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Psoralea, as in Pi Shen Shuang Bu Wan.
4. Used for spontaneous sweating and night sweating. When qi and yin are both injured, combined with Dragon Bone, Oyster Shell, Ginseng, and Aconite; for yin deficiency with internal heat and night sweating, with heat in palms and soles or afternoon tidal fever, often combined with Rehmannia, Lycium bark, and floating wheat; if post-illness yang deficiency causes uncontrolled sweating, combined with Ginseng, Astragalus, Rehmannia, and White Peony.
Currently often used to treat hypertension due to Liver and Kidney deficiency, frequently combined with Acorus, Eucommia, and Spatholobus.

[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decoct 6–15 g; or used in pills or powders. To astringe yin and stop excessive sweating, use raw; to tonify Kidney and astringe essence, secure menstruation and reduce urination, use steamed; to tonify Liver and Kidney, harmonize blood and soothe menstruation, use wine-processed.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of vigorous Mingmen fire or pre-existing damp-heat with painful, scanty urination.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The fruit pulp contains cornuside, morroniside, 7-O-methylmorroniside, strychnoside, and loganin. It also contains tannins, glucose, gallic acid, tartaric acid, ursolic acid, vitamin A, volatile oils, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Fructus Corni enhances nonspecific immune function; water and alcohol extracts can enhance humoral immunity. Extracts show significant hypoglycemic effects in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Decoctions inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, and various skin fungi.
