[Overview] This herb is also known as Dumaogen, Dujiao Xianmao, and Xianmao Shen. It is the rhizome of Curculigo orchioides Gaertn., a plant of the Amaryllidaceae family. It is produced in southwestern China and provinces south of the Yangtze River, with Sichuan having a larger yield. It is harvested in autumn and winter by digging up, removing root heads and fine roots, washing clean, and drying in the sun.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, hot in nature, and toxic. Enters the Kidney, Liver, and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Warms Kidney Yang, strengthens sinews and bones, dispels cold and dampness.

[Applications]
1. Used for Kidney Yang deficiency and diminished Mingmen fire causing impotence, premature ejaculation, nocturnal emission with spermatorrhea, scanty semen and infertility, frequent urination and enuresis. Often combined with Epimedium (Yin Yang Huo), Cuscuta (Tu Si Zi), and Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi).
This herb is also used for early morning diarrhea due to Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency and incomplete digestion of grains, often combined with Psoralea (Bu Gu Zhi), Nutmeg (Rou Dou Kou), fried Atractylodes (Chao Bai Zhu), and Evodia (Wu Zhu Yu).
2. Used for Kidney Yang deficiency with cold-damp invasion causing cold and painful lumbar and knee joints, weakness of sinews and bones; often combined with Eucommia (Du Zhong), Taxillus (Sang Ji Sheng), Dog Spine (Gou Ji), Epimedium (Yin Yang Huo), and Aconite lateralis (Fu Pian).
Additionally, combined with Lycium fruit (Gou Qi Zi), Plantain seed (Che Qian Zi), and Rehmannia glutinosa (Shu Di Huang) for nourishing Liver and Kidney, used for premature graying of hair, dizziness, blurred vision due to Liver and Kidney deficiency, as in the formula Xianmao Xu Wan (仙茅虚丸). Currently, it is commonly used clinically to treat menopausal syndrome in women, hypertension, and other chronic diseases characterized by Kidney Yang deficiency and Liver-Kidney deficiency syndromes.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders; or infused in wine.

[Cautions] This herb is pungent and warm in nature; therefore, it is contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with fire excess. Due to its strong medicinal properties and mild toxicity, long-term use is not recommended.

1. Chemical constituents: Rhizoma Curculiginis contains curculigoside, lichesterinic acid glucoside, curculigosaponins, curculigosaponin aglycones, curculigotriol, lycorine, cyclobromene alcohol, stigmasterol, as well as tannins, fats, resins, and starch.
2. Pharmacological effects: The alcohol extract of Rhizoma Curculiginis exhibits sedative and anticonvulsant effects; it significantly inhibits ear swelling in mice induced by croton oil; curculigoside promotes macrophage proliferation and phagocytic function; decoctions increase the weight of the anterior pituitary, ovaries, and uterus in rats; the decoction inhibits Shigella dysenteriae, Fukuyama, and Song dysentery bacilli; the alcohol extract of the rhizome has hypoglycemic and anticancer activities.
