[Overview] This herb is also known as Niuxi, Jia Niuxi, and Sweet Niuxi. It is the root of Cyathula officinalis Kuan, a plant of the Amaranthaceae family. It is mainly produced in Sichuan and other regions. It is harvested in autumn and winter, with the removal of the stem base, fine roots, and dirt. It is then baked or sun-dried to half dry, stacked to moisten, and then baked or sun-dried completely.

[Properties] Taste: sweet, slightly bitter; nature: neutral. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and dispels blood stasis; benefits the joints; strengthens the lower back and knees; promotes urination and unblocks painful urinary dribbling.

[Applications]
1. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, traumatic swelling and pain. For amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, often combined with Angelica sinensis, Carthamus tinctorius, and Ligusticum chuanxiong; for traumatic injuries, can be combined with Boswellia and Dragon’s blood.
2. Used for rheumatic joint pain and chronic soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees; often combined with Taxillus, Dipsacus, and Angelica pubescens; if damp-heat is pouring downward causing red, swollen, painful joints, can be combined with Phellodendron and Atractylodes.
3. Used for hot painful urinary dribbling, hematuria; can be combined with Akebia, Dianthus, and Typha.
Additionally, combined with Eupolyphaga and Strychnos nux-vomica, it can treat sequelae of pediatric paralysis.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or used in pills or powders; can also be soaked in wine for drinking.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in pregnancy and in cases of excessive menstrual bleeding.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include β-ecdysterone and trace elements such as titanium.
2. Pharmacological effects: Cyathula officinalis fluid extract and decoction have a uterine excitatory effect; alcohol extracts and saponins have anti-inflammatory effects; benzene extracts have antifertility effects; the contained ecdysterone promotes bile secretion, lowers blood lipids, and protects the liver.
3. Clinical reports: Dysfunctional uterine bleeding treated with 30–45 g of Radix Cyathulae, decocted and taken as a single dose daily or twice daily for 2–4 days; for longer courses, 5–10 days. Note: Radix Cyathulae’s main indications are basically similar to those of Radix Achyranthis bidentatae (Huai Niuxi), but clinically Huai Niuxi is considered more tonifying to the Liver and Kidney and strengthening to sinews and bones; Radix Cyathulae is more focused on invigorating blood and unblocking channels, relaxing sinews, and relieving bi syndrome.
