[Overview] This herb is also known as Guangdong Jinqiancao, Luodi Jinqiancao, and Matisiang. It is the aerial part of the Fabaceae plant Desmodium styracifolium (Osb.) Merr. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, with additional production in Fujian, Guangxi, and Hunan provinces. Harvested in summer and autumn, impurities are removed and it is sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste is sweet and bland; nature is cool. Enters the Bladder, Liver, and Gallbladder meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination, facilitates urination to expel stones, clears heat and detoxifies.

[Applications]
1. Used for urinary tract stones. For ureteral and bladder stones, it can be combined with Haijinsha (Lygodium japonicum), Shiye (Pyrrosia leaf), Jineijin (chicken gizzard lining), Cheqian Cao (Plantago herb), etc.; for kidney stones, it can be used with Dahuang (Rheum), Huashi (Talcum), Chenxiang (Aquilaria resin), etc.; if stone attack occurs with hematuria symptoms, add Puhuang (Typha pollen), Niuxi (Achyranthes root), etc.
2. Used for hot stranguria with painful, reddish urination or hematuria. The former is often combined with Cheqian Cao (Plantago herb), Jinyinhua (Lonicera flower), Haijinsha; the latter is often combined with Shengdi (Rehmannia root), Danpi (Moutan bark), Taoren (Peach kernel). This herb can also be used for chyluria, often combined with Tufuling (Smilax glabra), Bixie (Dioscorea hypoglauca), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), etc.
3. Used for gallstones, often combined with Yinchen (Artemisia capillaris), Yujin (Curcuma), Dahuang (Rheum), Muxiang (Aucklandia), etc.
4. Used for heat toxin abscesses and swellings, urticaria, mouth ulcers, sore throat; decoction is taken orally or used as a gargle, and can also be used externally for washing. For mastitis, the herb can be pounded and applied externally.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; fresh herb dosage is doubled. External use: appropriate amount, decocted water for gargling; or pounded for topical application.

1. Chemical constituents include soy saponins, soy sapogenins, New Zealand vitexin, polysaccharides, flavonoids, etc.
2. Pharmacology: Guangjinqiancao and Chinese patent medicines with it as the main ingredient have diuretic effects and prevent and treat urinary tract stones; decoctions or total flavonoid glycosides exhibit significant anti-inflammatory effects; granules have analgesic effects. Total flavonoids from Guangjinqiancao have antihypertensive effects, inhibit platelet aggregation, and prevent in vitro thrombosis; they can improve memory in mice, indicating beneficial effects on intelligence and diuresis.
