[Overview] This herb is also known as Suibu, Rou Suibu, Mao Jiang, and Guo Shan Long. It is the rhizome of the plant Drynaria fortunei (Kunze) J.Sm., belonging to the family Polypodiaceae. It is mainly produced in Hunan, Zhejiang, and Guangxi provinces; it is also found in Fujian, Sichuan, and Guizhou, with the largest production in Hunan. It can be harvested year-round, cleaned of mud and sand, dried, or the hair-like scales can be singed off before drying.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies the Kidney and strengthens bones; heals fractures and relieves pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees due to Kidney deficiency, and weakness of the lower limbs. Often combined with Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang), Eucommiae Cortex (Du Zhong), Taxilli Herba (Sang Ji Sheng), Achyranthis Radix (Niu Xi), etc. If accompanied by wind-damp painful obstruction or poor blood circulation, it is combined with Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Du Huo), Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Wei Ling Xian), and Chicken Bone Grass (Ji Gu Cao).
2. Used for tinnitus and deafness caused by Liver and Kidney Yin deficiency with hyperactive Yang, and for loose, painful teeth or bleeding gums due to deficiency. For tinnitus and deafness, it is commonly combined with Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang), Corni Fructus (Shan Zhu Yu), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shan Yao), Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie), etc. Clinically, it is often used to prevent and treat streptomycin-induced ototoxicity and allergic reactions causing tinnitus and deafness. For loose or painful teeth or bleeding gums, it can be used alone or combined with Qing Salt and roasted Sophorae Fructus powder for topical application to the teeth.
3. Used for chronic diarrhea and dysentery due to Spleen and Kidney deficiency. It can be powdered and cooked with pork kidney for consumption, or combined with Myristicae Semen (Rou Dou Kou), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shan Yao), Poria (Fu Ling), and Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi).
4. Used for traumatic injuries and fractures. Can be taken internally or applied externally. Internally, often soaked in wine or powdered with natural copper, myrrh, and turtle shell for oral administration, as in the formula Gusuibu San (骨碎补散). Externally, used alone or combined with natural copper, dragon’s blood (Xue Jie), frankincense (Ru Xiang), and myrrh (Mo Yao), ground into powder and applied to the injury site. Additionally, Rhizoma Drynariae soaked in wine and applied topically can treat alopecia areata, stubborn dermatitis, corns, and warts.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 3–9 g, fresh herb 6–15 g; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied as a poultice or powdered and applied topically, or soaked in wine and rubbed on the affected area.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include naringin, 9(11)-farnesene, 3-eudesmane, 21-hopane, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, and others. It also contains tetracyclic triterpenoids such as cycloartanol acetate and drynarioside acetate.
2. Pharmacological effects: Rhizoma Drynariae injection has preventive and therapeutic effects on experimentally induced hyperlipidemia in rabbits by lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides, and reducing aortic atherosclerotic plaque formation. It has a cardiotonic effect in rabbits, acting directly on the myocardium rather than the sympathetic nervous system. It inhibits streptomycin-induced ototoxicity; its decoction used alone or with streptomycin can prevent acute adverse reactions such as headache, dizziness, tinnitus, and numbness of lips and face. It also exhibits inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus, Bacillus anthracis, Shigella flexneri, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Kidney deficiency toothache: used Rhizoma Drynariae and Rehmanniae Radix each 30 g, decocted and taken once daily. In 23 cases treated, pain was relieved after 1–2 doses; effective upon recurrence. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1987,(1):49] (2) Streptomycin adverse reactions: used 50% Rhizoma Drynariae injection as solvent, once daily, 3 ml each time (equivalent to 1.5 g crude drug); or Rhizoma Drynariae 15 g decocted once daily. In the injection group of 34 cases, 28 cured, 5 improved, 1 ineffective; in the decoction group of 36 cases, 28 cured, 5 improved, 3 ineffective. [Kang Sheng Su, 1981,(4):52] (3) Corns: Rhizoma Drynariae 30 g powdered, mixed with 60 g melted beeswax to form an ointment, shaped into a cake, applied tightly to the affected area and fixed with adhesive tape. Treated 100 cases with excellent efficacy. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1990, 22(4):9] (4) Flat warts: Rhizoma Drynariae 150 g (powdered), Mume Fructus 150 g (pitted and powdered), and 500 ml vinegar prepared into a vinegar tincture. After hot compressing the affected area for 5–10 minutes, apply the vinegar tincture externally 3–4 times daily for 10 days per course.
