[Overview] Source: The root and rhizome of plants from the Ephedraceae family, specifically Ephedra sinica Stapf (Ma Huang) or Ephedra intermedia Schrenk ex C. A. Mey. It is mainly produced in Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, and other regions. Harvested in late autumn by digging up, removing fine roots and young stems, then sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste: sweet, slightly astringent; Nature: neutral. Enters the Lung meridian.

[Actions] Astringes the exterior and stops sweating.

[Applications] Used for spontaneous sweating and night sweating. For spontaneous sweating due to Qi deficiency, it is often combined with Astragalus (Huang Qi); for deficiency of both Qi and blood, it is commonly paired with Astragalus and Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), as in the formula Mahuanggen Decoction. For night sweating due to Yin deficiency, it can be used together with Schisandra, Cornus officinalis, and White Peony root. Besides internal use, it can also be externally applied by powdering and mixing with oyster shell and millet flour to stop sweating.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 3–9 grams; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases with exterior pathogenic factors.

1. Chemical Constituents: Contains Ephedra root alkaloids A, B, C, D, feruloyl histamine, Ephedra root factor A, tyrosine betaine, etc.
2. Pharmacological Effects: Ephedra root alkaloids A, B, C, D and tyrosine betaine all have antihypertensive effects; Ephedra root alkaloids can inhibit low fever and sweating induced by nicotine.
3. Clinical Reports: Rosacea: Used raw Ephedra root and raw Ephedra stem, each 80 g, added 150 ml of white liquor, decocted for half an hour. Take 25 ml twice daily (morning and evening).
