1. Chemical constituents include Eucommia gum, Eucommioside, Eucommiol, phenols, chlorogenic acid and other organic acids, fats, flavonoids, aldehydes, tannins, etc. It also contains amino acids such as arginine, histidine, glutamic acid, cystine, and 15 inorganic elements including germanium and selenium. Trace amounts of alkaloids and vitamin C are also present.
2. Pharmacological effects: Eucommia aqueous, alcoholic, and ether extracts, as well as purified sugars, alkaloids, cornoside (from peach leaf coral), and chlorogenic acid, all exhibit varying degrees of antihypertensive effects. Sand-roasted and charred Eucommia have better antihypertensive effects than raw Eucommia. Eucommia reduces cholesterol absorption and significantly increases liver glycogen content in mice. The decoction dilates blood vessels. It modulates cellular immunity but has little effect on humoral immunity. It weakens spontaneous uterine contractions in vitro and antagonizes uterine contractants (acetylcholine, oxytocin), thus producing an antispasmodic effect. It stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and also has sedative, analgesic, anti-stress, diuretic, and anti-aging effects.
3. Clinical reports on hypertension: Eucommia bark slices (each containing 4.9 g raw herb), 1 slice per dose, 3 times daily; leaf slices (each containing 2 g raw herb), 2 slices per dose, 3 times daily. Taken continuously for 100 days. A total of 102 cases of hypertension were treated, with a total effective rate of 76.4% for bark slices and 78.7% for leaf slices.
