[Overview] This herb is also known as Maziren, Maren, and Dama Ren. It is the mature fruit of Cannabis sativa L., a plant of the Moraceae family. It is cultivated throughout China, mainly produced in Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, and Jiangsu provinces. The fruit is harvested in autumn when mature, impurities are removed, and then dried under the sun.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the spleen, stomach, and large intestine meridians.

[Actions] Moistens dryness and promotes bowel movements; promotes urination and relieves stranguria.

[Applications]
1. Used for dry constipation. This herb is mostly suitable for elderly, postpartum women, and those with deficiency of body fluids and blood causing dry constipation. It can be used alone or combined with Angelica sinensis, peach kernel, donkey-hide gelatin, Cistanche deserticola, etc., as in the formula Runchang Wan (润肠丸). When combined with rhubarb, Magnolia officinalis, apricot kernel, and Fructus Aurantii, it can enhance the laxative effect, as in the formula Maren Wan (麻仁丸).
2. Used for hot stranguria with scanty and painful urination. It can be combined with Malva seed, rice, and scallion white, cooked as congee, as in the formula Dongmazizi Zhou (冬麻子粥).
Additionally, the herb can be stir-fried until fragrant, ground into powder and taken orally to treat wind-bi syndrome, utilizing its function to moisten dryness, dispel wind, and promote blood circulation. Applied topically as a poultice, it can treat boils and erysipelas, or taken together with Lonicera japonica and licorice.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 10–15 g; or incorporated into pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically or decoction used for washing.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and kidney deficiency with loose stools, impotence, spermatorrhea, or leukorrhea; avoid overdose and prolonged use.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The herb mainly contains alkaloids such as trigonelline, fatty oils, with the oil portion primarily composed of cannabidiol, calcium and magnesium phytate, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Fructus Cannabis produces fatty acids upon contact with alkaline intestinal fluid, stimulating the intestinal wall and enhancing peristalsis, thereby exerting a laxative effect; its emulsion can significantly reduce blood pressure in experimental animals; it can markedly inhibit serum cholesterol elevation in rats fed a high-fat diet.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Facial paralysis: used Fructus Cannabis 30 g, Scorpio 12 g, musk appropriate amount, made into Sanmiao Gao (三妙膏) for external application. Treated 100 cases with 86 cured and 14 improved. [Henan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985, (4):7] (2) Chronic pharyngitis: used Fructus Cannabis 50 g soaked in 300 ml water for 60 minutes, decocted over low heat to obtain 150 ml; re-decocted with 150 ml water, boiled for 20 minutes to obtain juice; the two decoctions combined and taken twice daily, one dose per day. The goal was 2–3 soft bowel movements daily without finishing the entire dose. One case reported satisfactory efficacy. [New Chinese Medicine, 2002, Xie 34(1):29]
