[Overview] This herb is also known as Gonglao Ye, Mao’er Ci, Gougu Ci, and Shida Gonglao Ye. It is the leaf of Ilex cornuta Lindl. ex Paxt., a plant of the Aquifoliaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu and Henan provinces, with additional production in Zhejiang, Anhui, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. Leaves are harvested in autumn, with fine twigs removed, then sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cool in nature. Enters the liver and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Clears deficiency heat, benefits liver and kidney, dispels wind-dampness.
[Applications]
1. Used for yin deficiency with labor heat, cough with blood-streaked sputum; can be brewed as tea or combined with Digu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Xianhecao (Agrimonia pilosa), Baibu (Stemona root), Hanliancao (Eclipta prostrata), etc.; or combined with Maidong (Ophiopogon japonicus), Zhimu (Anemarrhena asphodeloides), Chuanbei (Fritillaria cirrhosa). Commonly used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis with hemoptysis, tidal fever, and night sweats.
2. Used for liver and kidney deficiency causing soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, dizziness, and tinnitus; often combined with Sangjisheng (Taxillus chinensis), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Huainiu Xi (Achyranthes bidentata), Xuduan (Dipsacus asper).
3. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction and lumbar muscle strain; can be added with Sangjisheng and stewed with pig kidney. Commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, it can be used for carbuncles and vitiligo.
