[Overview] This herb is also known as Jinfenghuazi and Fengxianzi. It is the mature seed of Impatiens balsamina L., a plant of the family Balsaminaceae. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei, Anhui, and other regions. The fruits are harvested gradually before maturity from August to September, dried in the sun, and then the seeds are extracted by removing the pericarp and other impurities.

[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, warm in nature, slightly toxic.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and regulates qi, softens hardness and dissipates nodules.

[Applications]
1. Used for blood stasis causing dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and postpartum abdominal pain. For treating women’s dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea, it can be combined with Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), Lycopus lucidus (Zelan), Leonurus japonicus (Yimucao), etc.; it can also be ground into powder and made into pills, taken with decoction of Angelica sinensis (Danggui). For postpartum lochia retention with blood stasis and abdominal pain, it can be used alone as a decoction, taken with brown sugar, or ground into powder and taken with warm wine.
2. Used for food obstruction and fishbone stuck in the throat. For phlegm and qi obstruction causing food obstruction, it is often combined with Clematis chinensis (Weilingxian), Scutellaria barbata (Banzhilian), Trichosanthes kirilowii seed (Gualouren), fresh oyster shell (Shengmuli), dung beetle (Qianglang), Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), and leech (Shuizhi). For fishbone obstruction, it can be chewed until soft and swallowed, or decocted with Clematis chinensis (Weilingxian) for oral administration.
3. Used for sores, ulcers, swelling and toxicity, dental caries and toothache. For treating sores and swelling with toxicity, it can be combined with Rheum palmatum (Dahuang) and Galla chinensis (Wubeizi), stir-fried until yellow, ground into powder, and applied topically with rice vinegar. For toothache due to dental caries with looseness, the powder can be applied directly to the affected tooth.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4–4.5 g. External use: appropriate amount, ground powder or made into a paste for topical application.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases without blood stasis and in pregnancy.

1. Chemical constituents: Semen Impatientis contains impatiens sterol, palmitic acid, α-spinasterol, and β-sitosterol; it also contains saponins, polysaccharides, dendrobine diglycoside, dendrobine triglycoside, and derivatives of honokiol; additionally, it contains volatile oils and proteins.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Semen Impatientis can inhibit ovulation in animals, causing uterine and ovarian atrophy, thus exhibiting antifertility effects; its syrup, decoction, tincture, and aqueous extracts have a significant excitatory effect on the uterus, increasing contraction frequency, tension, and even causing tonic contractions; the decoction also shows varying degrees of inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, and Salmonella typhi.
