[Overview] This herb is also known as Bian Zhu, Di Bian Xu, Bian Xu Liao, and Da Xu Pian. It is the aerial part of Polygonum aviculare L., a plant of the Polygonaceae family. It is produced throughout most regions of China, with the largest yields in Northeast China, Henan, Shanxi, and Hubei provinces. It is harvested in summer when the leaves are lush, with roots and impurities removed, then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Bladder meridian.

[Actions] Promotes urination and unblocks strangury; kills parasites and relieves itching.

[Applications]
1. Used for strangury with difficult urination. For hot strangury, often combined with Mu Tong (Akebia caulis), Che Qian Zi (Plantago seed), Hua Shi (Talcum), etc., as in the formula Ba Zheng San (Eight-Correcting Powder); for bloody strangury, combined with Xiao Ji (Small Thistle) and Bai Mao Gen (Imperata root); for sandy or stone strangury, combined with Shi Wei (Pyrrosia leaf), Hai Jin Sha (Lygodium spore), Jin Qian Cao (Lysimachia), Ji Nei Jin (Chicken Gizzard lining), etc.
2. Used for damp-heat jaundice, dysentery, and leukorrhea. For damp-heat jaundice, combined with Yin Chen (Artemisia capillaris), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardenia fruit), Che Qian Zi, etc.; for damp-heat dysentery, combined with Che Qian Cao (Plantago herb), Di Jin Cao (Lysimachia christinae), Xian He Cao (Agrimonia), etc.; for damp-heat leukorrhea, combined with Huang Bai (Phellodendron bark), Chuan Gen Pi (Toona bark), Ze Xie (Alisma), etc.
3. Used for ascariasis, pinworm, and hookworm infections. For ascariasis, combined with Shi Jun Zi (Quisqualis seed), Wu Mei (Mume fruit), Chuan Jiao (Sichuan pepper), decocted and taken on an empty stomach; for pinworm, combined with Fei Zi (Torreya seed) and Bing Lang (Areca seed); for pinworm-induced anal itching, decoction used for fumigation and washing.
4. Used for female genital itching with leukorrhea, damp sores, and scabies; can be used alone as a decoction for external washing or fresh herb juice applied externally; can also be combined with Cang Zhu (Atractylodes), Huang Bai, Ku Shen (Sophora root), Bai Xian Pi (Dictamnus root bark), etc.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or juice from crushed herb. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically or decoction used for washing.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of deficiency cold in the lower burner.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains flavonoids such as quercetin, bianxuglycoside, and quercitrin; coumarin compounds including umbelliferone; acidic components such as dextrorotatory catechin, gallic acid, oxalic acid, chlorogenic acid, and para-coumaric acid. It also contains various amino acids, glucose, fructose, sucrose, and diuretic mucilage.
2. Pharmacological effects: Bianxu exhibits significant diuretic effects, possibly due to potassium salts contained in the herb; infusions, decoctions, or ethanol extracts show antihypertensive effects in experimental animals; it has antibacterial effects against dysentery bacillus, with clinical efficacy similar to aminoglycosides; also inhibits fungi; bianxuglycoside has choleretic effects in rats and dogs; has mild astringent effects and can be used for wounds.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Hydrocele: Using Sheng Yi Ren (Coix seed) 30 g and Bianxu 30 g, decocted in 500 ml water, taken once daily in two doses morning and evening for 7 days; in 50 cases treated, 46 cases showed disappearance of effusion and return to normal, 4 cases had a reduction in swelling by one-third. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1982, (8):373] (2) Toothache: Using Bianxu 50–100 g (fresh herb amount not limited), decocted and taken twice daily; in 81 cases treated, except 1 case with purulent periodontitis, all others experienced pain relief within 2–3 days of medication.
