[Overview] This herb is also known as Hongya Daji, Zi Daji, Guang Daji, and Nan Daji. It is the tuberous root of Knoxia valerianoides Thorel ex Pitard, a plant of the Rubiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guangxi and Yunnan, with Guangdong also producing it. The roots are dug up in summer and autumn, with stems and fibrous roots removed, then washed and dried in the sun, or blanched in boiling water before drying.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Slightly toxic. Enters the Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Promotes diuresis to dispel water retention, detoxifies, and disperses nodules.
[Applications]
1. Used for edema with fullness, ascites, phlegm-fluid retention causing asthma and cough; can be used alone as a decoction or combined with Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos), Gansui (Kansui Radix), and others.
2. Used for carbuncles, sores, and toxic swellings; fresh root can be pounded and applied externally, or combined with dandelion and wild chrysanthemum for use.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 1.5–3 g; powdered 0.3–1 g. Vinegar-processed for purgation or raw for use. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied or used as a decoction wash.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in deficiency and pregnancy. Antagonistic to licorice.

1. Chemical constituents: The root contains free and combined anthraquinones, knoxiaoside, vanillic acid, and methyl isorhamnetin.
2. Pharmacological effects: In vitro, Radix Knoxia inhibits Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; aqueous decoction of raw Radix Knoxia shows significant diuretic effect with markedly increased urine output after administration.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Schizophrenia: Fresh whole herb Hongya Daji 500 g decocted to 300 ml, taken in one dose. If vomiting and purging do not significantly reduce mania, 250 g of the herb is decocted every two days. Twelve cases treated, all cured.
