[Overview] This herb is also known as Sanggenpi, Sanggen Baipi, Sangpi, and Baisangpi. It is the root bark of Morus alba L., a plant of the Moraceae family. It is produced in most parts of China, mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, Hebei, and Sichuan provinces. The roots are harvested from late autumn after leaf fall until before spring sprouting. The yellow-brown coarse outer bark is scraped off, then the root is split longitudinally to peel off the root bark, which is then sun-dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Drains Lung heat to relieve asthma, promotes urination to reduce edema.

[Applications]
1. Used for Lung heat asthma and cough or water retention in the Lung causing distension and dyspnea. For Lung heat asthma with thick yellow phlegm, often combined with Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Zhe Bei) and Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin). For Lung heat cough and asthma with concurrent fever, irritability, and heat in palms and soles, often combined with Lycii Cortex (Digupi) and Glycyrrhizae Radix (Gan Cao), as in the formula Xie Bai San (泻白散). For water retention in the Lung with distension and dyspnea, can be combined with Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang), Armeniacae Semen (Xing Ren), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin), and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Gan Jiang). For Lung and Kidney deficiency with copious phlegm, asthma, afternoon fever, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, can be combined with Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Di), Ginseng Radix (Ren Shen), Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi), and Astragali Radix (Huang Qi), as in the formula Bu Fei Tang (补肺汤).
2. Used for edema, especially suitable for Yang edema such as wind edema and skin edema. For water-damp retention causing body and facial swelling, distension, dyspnea, and difficult urination, often combined with Arecae Pericarpium (Da Fu Pi), Poriae Cutis (Fu Ling Pi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen Pi), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Peel (Sheng Jiang Pi), as in the formula Wu Pi Yin (五皮饮). Additionally, modern clinical use of Cortex Mori includes treatment of hypertension characterized by Liver Yang rising, often combined with Prunellae Spica (Xia Tian Cao), Scutellariae Radix (Shi Jue Ming).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into powders. External use: appropriate amount, juice applied topically or decoction used for washing. Use raw for draining Lung heat and promoting urination; use honey-fried for treating Lung deficiency cough.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in Lung cold without water retention and wind-cold cough.

1. Chemical constituents: Cortex Mori contains flavonoids such as sanggenon, sanggenetin, kuwanon, mulberroside A, morusin, sanggenol, and morin. It also contains moracin derivatives, umbelliferone, scopoletin, and mulberroside A.
2. Pharmacological effects: Water and n-butanol extracts of Cortex Mori exhibit significant diuretic effects; decoctions and extracts using water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, or ether solvents show varying degrees of antihypertensive effects in anesthetized rabbits, rats, and renal hypertensive rats; water and n-butanol extracts have sedative and tranquilizing effects; water extracts show significant analgesic effects; methanol extracts and mulberroside A have hypoglycemic effects.
