[Overview] This herb is also known as Wujia Pi, Northern Wujia Pi, Mountain Wujia Pi, and Fragrant Wujia Pi. It is the root bark of Periploca sepium Bunge, a plant of the family Asclepiadaceae. It is mainly produced in Shanxi, Henan, Hebei, and Shandong provinces, with additional production in Sichuan, Gansu, Hunan, Liaoning, Jilin, and Jiangsu. The roots are dug up in spring and autumn; the bark is peeled off after fresh pounding, the woody core removed, and then dried in the sun.
[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly warm in nature. Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Heart meridians.
[Actions] Dispels wind-dampness, strengthens sinews and bones, promotes urination, and reduces swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction, joint stiffness, and cramping pain. It can be decocted or infused in wine with Qin Jiao (Gentiana macrophylla), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Hai Feng Teng (Kadsura), Niu Xi (Achyranthes root), etc. For chronic painful obstruction with weakness in legs and feet, it can be combined with Mu Gua (Chaenomeles), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Niu Xi.
2. Used for edema and difficulty urinating, often combined with Fu Ling Pi (Poria bark), Da Fu Pi (Areca peel), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki bean), and others.
Additionally, Periploca Bark is used for scrotal edema and itching of the skin and genital area; it can be decocted and used externally for washing.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g; or infused in wine; or included in pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically or decocted for washing.
[Cautions] This herb is toxic; do not overdose or use long-term.

1. Chemical constituents: The root bark contains periplocin, northern periplocin, periplocoside, periploca canadine glycoside, β-sitosterol, and free pregnanol compounds such as 5-pregnene-3β,20(R)-diol 3-acetate, strophanthidin aglycone, periplocinone, 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Alcohol extracts of the stem and root bark have digitalis-like effects, with periplocin as the main component; its action is similar to that of toxic oleander glycosides. Alcohol extracts of Periploca Bark have hypotensive effects in rabbits and cats. Periplocin enhances respiratory system function. The chloroform-methanol fraction of Periploca Bark inhibits sarcoma S180 cells, with glycosides as the active components.
