[Overview] This herb is also known as Huashen, Re Shen, Baimao Shen, and Dahong Shen. It is the root of Physochlaina infundibularis Kuang, a Solanaceae family plant. It is mainly produced in Shaanxi, western Shanxi, and Henan provinces. The roots are harvested in early spring when sprouting or in early summer when withering, with the fibrous root tips and fine roots removed, then washed clean of soil and sun-dried.
[Properties] Sweet and slightly bitter in taste, hot in nature, and toxic. It enters the Lung and Heart meridians.
[Actions] Stops cough, resolves phlegm, and relieves asthma.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough and asthma with excessive phlegm. For deficiency cold phlegm cough and asthma, it can be combined with Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao), and rock sugar.
Currently, preparations such as Huashanshen extract tablets or aerosols are used to treat chronic bronchitis and asthmatic bronchitis with certain efficacy.
2. Used for deficiency-induced palpitations and insomnia, often combined with Longan aril (Longyan Rou), Polygala tenuifolia (Yuanzhi), and Ziziphus jujuba seed (Suanzaoren).
[Dosage and Administration] Taken orally, decocted in water, 0.1–0.2 g.
[Cautions] Should not be consumed in excess to avoid toxicity. Contraindicated in patients with glaucoma. Use with caution in pregnant women and those with prostatic hypertrophy.

1. Chemical constituents: The root contains atropine, scopolamine, scopoline, hyoscyamine, choline, as well as scopolamine derivatives, steroid compounds, amino acids, organic acids, sucrose, and reducing sugars.

Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Radix Physochlainae have a central nervous system inhibitory effect; exhibit actions similar to scopolamine, such as dilating rabbit pupils, inhibiting pilocarpine-induced salivation in dogs, and antagonizing acetylcholine and pilocarpine-induced hypotension; oral decoctions antagonize histamine-induced bronchospasm in guinea pigs and have antitussive (mouse ammonia aerosol method) and expectorant (mouse phenol red method) effects.
