[Overview] This product is also known as Songhuang, Songfen, Songhua. It is the pollen of Pinaceae plants including Pinus massoniana Lamb. (Masson Pine), Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. (Chinese Pine), or several other species of the same genus. Masson Pine pollen is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, and Hubei provinces; Chinese Pine pollen is mainly produced in Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. The pollen is harvested in spring when the flowers just open by picking the flower spikes, drying them, rubbing off the pollen, sieving to remove impurities, collecting the fine powder, and then drying it again.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Dries dampness and stops bleeding, dispels wind and calms the Liver.

[Applications]
1. Used for eczema, yellow weeping sores, skin ulceration, purulent discharge, diaper dermatitis, and external bleeding wounds. It can be used alone by sprinkling on the affected area or ground together with Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Kushen (Sophorae Radix), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) and applied as a topical powder.
2. Used for coughing blood, vomiting blood, blood in stool, and external bleeding wounds. If there is Lung Yin deficiency with coughing blood, it can be combined with Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Chuanbeimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus). For chronic cough with persistent bleeding and Qi and Yin deficiency, it can be combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus). For vomiting blood or blood in stool, it can be taken with cold boiled water; for external bleeding wounds, it can be applied topically alone.
3. Used for dysentery and diarrhea. For Spleen deficiency with watery diarrhea, it can be combined with Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria). For epidemic toxin dysentery, it can be taken with Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and honey water.
4. Used for wind invasion causing headache and dizziness. It can be taken soaked in wine alone or combined with Sangye (Mori Folium), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix).

[Dosage and Administration] External use: appropriate amount, dry sprinkled or applied as a powder. Internal use: decocted, 3–9 g; or taken as a powder. When used in decoctions, it is best placed in a cloth bag.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of blood deficiency and internal heat.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Masson Pine pollen contains oils and is rich in trace elements, especially potassium, magnesium, sulfur, manganese, zinc, and iron. Pollen from related species such as Pinus densiflora contains dehydroabietic acid and various enzymes including malate synthase, acid phosphatase, isocitrate lyase, and hydroxybenzoyl glucosyltransferase.
2. Clinical reports on hyperlipidemia: Pine pollen tablets (500 mg per tablet), 6 tablets per dose, twice daily, chewed and swallowed continuously for 4 months to observe efficacy. A total of 32 cases were treated, with 8 cured, 20 improved, and 4 ineffective, yielding an overall effective rate of 87.5%. [Anxuehui Chinese Medicine Clinical Journal, 1998, 10(2):82]
