[Overview] This herb is also known as Hei Jiang (Black Ginger). It is the processed product of the dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Ginger) from the Zingiberaceae family. The dried ginger is sand-fried until it swells, the surface turns brownish-black, and the interior becomes brownish-yellow, then removed, sifted to remove sand, and cooled.
[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Warms the middle burner and disperses cold, warms the meridians and stops bleeding.
[Applications]
1. Used for epigastric and abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea due to Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold. For cold stagnation causing cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, often combined with Gao Liang Jiang (Alpinia officinarum), as in Er Jiang Wan (Two Ginger Pill); for middle burner deficiency cold, disharmony of Spleen and Stomach, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, can be combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes macrocephala), Gan Cao (Licorice), as in Li Zhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill); for Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency with abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea, can be combined with prepared Fu Zi (Aconite), roasted Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg), etc.
2. Used for deficiency cold type hematemesis, hematochezia, and metrorrhagia, often combined with Ce Bai Tan (Charred Biota), Ai Ye Tan (Charred Mugwort Leaf), Wu Mei (Mume Fruit), etc.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted, 3–6 g; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in pregnancy and in cases of Yin deficiency with heat.
