[Overview] This herb is also known as Xixiancao, Huoxian, Zhugaocao, and Fengshicao. It is the aerial part of plants from the Asteraceae family: Siegesbeckia orientalis L., Siegesbeckia pubescens Makino, or Siegesbeckia glabrescens Makino. It is widely distributed throughout most regions of China. Harvest before or during flowering in summer and autumn by cutting the aerial parts, removing impurities, and drying in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, cold in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the liver and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Dispel wind-dampness, unblock the channels and collaterals, clear heat and detoxify.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome and wind invading the channels. Treats wind-damp painful obstruction, joint pain, numbness of limbs, weakness of feet with inability to walk, or inability to raise hands due to obstruction. Can be used alone, as in the formula Xixiancao San (豨莶散); often combined with Chouwutong (Stinking Wutong) in formulas such as Xitong Wan (豨桐丸). For wind invading the channels causing facial paralysis, slurred speech, or hemiplegia, it is commonly combined with Wujiapi (Acanthopanax bark), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), and Honghua (Carthamus).
2. Used for carbuncles, sores, and wind rash damp sores. For carbuncles, it can be combined with Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Baifan (Alum) as a powder taken with warm wine. For wind rash damp sores with itchy skin, it can be combined with Baixianpi (Dictamnus root bark) and Cangerzi (Xanthium fruit) for decoction fumigation and washing.
Additionally, it can treat chronic malaria by using the fresh herb juice; treat jaundice when combined with Zhizi (Gardenia) and Yinchen (Artemisia). Currently, it is often used for hypertension, either alone as a decoction or combined with Sangjisheng (Taxillus), Niuxi (Achyranthes), and Chouwutong.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–12 g; juice extracted by pounding or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically; or powdered and sprinkled; or decoction used for fumigation and washing.

[Cautions] Use cautiously in those without wind-damp conditions; raw or large doses may easily cause vomiting.

3. Clinical reports: For sequelae of cerebrovascular accident, Herba Siegesbeckiae 500 g was sprayed layer by layer with 30 g each of honey, rice wine, or aged wine, steamed until permeated and dried, repeated nine times, then pulverized. Honey 600 g was boiled to a honey-like consistency and mixed with the powder to form pills the size of wutongzi (Firmiana seed).
