[Overview] This herb is also known as Jingjiehua, Xiaotonghua, Shantongcao, and Yupaotong. It is the pith of the stems of plants from the Stachyuraceae family: Stachyurus himalaicus Hook.f. et Thomes, Stachyurus chinensis Franch, or from the Cornaceae family plant Helwingia japonica (Thunb.) Dietr. It is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Gansu, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hunan provinces. The stems are harvested in autumn, cut into sections, and the fresh pith is extracted, straightened, and dried in the sun.

1. Used for febrile diseases with irritability and thirst, difficult or scanty urination, or reddish urine; can be combined with Gardenia jasminoides (Zhizi), Rehmannia glutinosa (Shengdihuang), Lophatherum gracile (Danzhuye), Anemarrhena asphodeloides (Zhimu), etc.
2. Used for damp-heat strangury syndrome, urinary retention or oliguria, edema; can be combined with Plantago asiatica seeds (Cheqianzi), Kochia scoparia fruit (Difuzi), etc.
