[Overview] This herb is also known as Silver Bupleurum, Silver Hu, Ox Tripe Root, and Earth Ginseng. It is the root of Stellaria dichotoma L. var. lanceolata Bge., a plant of the Caryophyllaceae family. It is mainly produced in Tao Le, Yanchi, Lingwu, Zhongwei, and other areas of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as well as in Gansu and Inner Mongolia. It is harvested in autumn by digging up, removing residual stems, fibrous roots, and dirt, then washing and drying in the sun.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Clears deficiency heat and eliminates nutritional heat.
[Applications]
1. Used for yin deficiency fever, tidal fever due to consumptive heat, night sweating; often combined with Qinghao (Artemisia annua), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Biejia (Trionycis Carapax), etc., as in Qinggu San (Clear Bone Powder). For late-stage warm disease with lingering heat, often combined with Baiwei (Cynanchi atrati Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Qinghao, etc. For yin deficiency with vigorous fire injuring the collaterals causing hemoptysis or epistaxis, often combined with Qiancao Gen (Rubia Root), Ce Bai Ye (Platycladi Cacumen), Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix).
2. Used for pediatric nutritional impairment with fever, abdominal distension, emaciation, irritability; often combined with Dangshen (Codonopsis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Digupi, Huhuanglian (Picrorhiza Rhizome), etc. If accompanied by food stagnation, often combined with Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Jineijin (Gallus Gizzard Membrane); if complicated by parasitic accumulation, combined with Shijunzi (Quisqualis Semen), Binglang (Arecae Semen).
Additionally, combined with Shashen (Adenophora Root), Xigua Pi (Watermelon Peel), it can be used for pediatric summer fever.
