[Overview] This herb is also known as Shui Changpu, Shui Chang, Ni Changpu, and Pu Jian. It is the rhizome of Acorus calamus L., a plant of the Araceae family. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Liaoning, Sichuan, Tibet, and other regions, and is a commonly used Tibetan medicinal material. It is harvested in autumn and winter, with roots and mud removed, then sun-dried.

[Properties] It has a pungent and bitter taste and a warm nature. It enters the Heart, Liver, and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Transforms phlegm and opens orifices; dispels dampness and strengthens the stomach; kills parasites and relieves itching.

[Applications]
1. Used for phlegm-heat convulsions, palpitations, and forgetfulness. For treating phlegm-heat convulsions and unclear consciousness, it is often combined with Kai Chuan Huanglian, Tianzhu Huang, Shijue Ming, and Gou Teng; for sudden epileptic seizures, it can be combined with Quan Xie, Bai Fu Qiao Zi, and Tian Nan Xing; for phlegm-heat disturbing the heart causing restlessness, palpitations, and forgetfulness, it can be combined with Yuan Zhi, Fu Shen, and Long Gu.
2. Used for stomach pain caused by damp turbidity obstruction, chest and abdominal fullness, poor appetite with greasy tongue coating; often combined with Huo Xiang, Dou Kou, Chen Pi, and others.
Additionally, it can be used for acute bacillary dysentery and chronic bronchitis with cough and excessive phlegm.

1. Chemical constituents: The fresh rhizome contains volatile oils, with main components including cis-methyl isoeugenol, acorone, isoshyobunone diol, and acoradiene.
2. Pharmacological effects: The ethanol extract of Rhizoma Acori Calami can prolong pentobarbital-induced sleep time and also extend the disappearance time of righting reflex induced by ethanol or ether. It significantly inhibits conditioned avoidance response in rats. The volatile oil has antiasthmatic, antitussive, and expectorant effects; it exhibits antispasmodic effects on isolated intestinal, uterine, and tracheal smooth muscle. In vitro, the volatile oil inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, pyogenic streptococci, Escherichia coli, Shigella, Salmonella typhi, and paratyphoid A bacteria to varying degrees and durations. The aqueous extract inhibits Trichophyton violaceum, Microsporum concentricum, and Asterophora lycoperdoides to different extents.
