[Overview] This herb is also known as Luoshi, Shilongteng, Baihuateng, and Zuangufeng. It is the leafy stem vine of Trachelospermum jasminoides (Lindl.) Lem., a plant of the Apocynaceae family. It is found throughout China, mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Shandong, and Fujian provinces. Harvested in autumn, cut into sections, and sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Lung meridians.

[Actions] Dispel wind and unblock the collaterals; cool the blood and reduce swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction and muscle and tendon spasms, especially suitable for treating wind-heat painful obstruction with joint redness and swelling. Often combined with Lonicera japonica vine (Rendongteng), earthworm (Dilong), and Gentiana macrophylla (Qinjiao). For wind-cold-damp painful obstruction with bone and joint pain and soreness in the lower back and knees, combined with Aconitum kusnezoffii (Caowu), Chaenomeles speciosa (Mugua), Acanthopanax gracilistylus (Wujapi), and Haifengteng. For chronic painful obstruction with blood deficiency and liver-kidney insufficiency, generalized pain, and weakness in the lower back and knees, combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Achyranthes bidentata (Niuxi), and Dipsacus asper (Chuanduan).
2. Used for toxic heat throat painful obstruction and carbuncles and ulcers. For toxic heat throat painful obstruction with sore and swollen throat, decocted alone and taken frequently; if toxic heat is severe, combined with Belamcanda chinensis (Shegan) and Platycodon grandiflorus (Jiegeng). For toxic heat carbuncles with redness, swelling, and pain, decocted alone for internal use or external wash; or combined with Gleditsia sinensis thorns (Zaojiao ci), Trichosanthes kirilowii (Gualou), Boswellia carterii (Ruxiang), and Commiphora myrrha (Moyao).
3. Used for traumatic injuries and bruises; fresh herb is pounded and applied topically or juice taken internally; or combined with Carthamus tinctorius (Honghua) and Dragon’s blood (Xuejie).
Additionally, clinically used for hematuria and bloody urine, combined with Gardenia jasminoides (Shanzhi) and Achyranthes bidentata (Niuxi).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into pills or powders; or soaked in alcohol. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied as a paste or juice applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Yang deficiency with aversion to cold and loose stools.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The stem contains arctiin, tracheloside, deoxyluo tracheloside, arctigenin, rubber inositol, suiluohan pine ester phenol, trachelogenin, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Caulis Trachelospermi inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, and Salmonella typhi; the luteolin glycosides in the leaves significantly inhibit xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in uric acid synthesis.
3. Clinical reports: Pediatric diarrhea—using 200 g fresh Caulis Trachelospermi with 2500 ml water, boiled to a boil, maintained at warm temperature for 15 minutes, strained and juice retained, applied externally (below both knees). Mild cases treated once daily, moderate cases twice daily. Among 200 cases treated, cured: mild 128 cases (64.00%), moderate 33 cases (16.5%), severe 15 cases (7.5%).
