[Overview] This herb is also known as Rudijinniu, Liangbianzhen, Wubuta, and Shuangmianzhen. It is the root of Zanthoxylum nitidum (Roxb.) DC., a plant of the Rutaceae family. It is mainly produced in Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Taiwan, and other regions. It can be harvested year-round, then cleaned, sliced or sectioned, and sun-dried.

[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, slightly warm in nature. Slightly toxic. Dispels wind.

[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and activates blood, dispels wind and unblocks the collaterals, reduces swelling and relieves pain. Resolves dampness.

[Applications] Medicinal uses:
1. Used for wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, pain in muscles and bones, traumatic injuries and fractures.
2. Used for stomach pain, toothache, sore throat pain, hernia pain, abdominal pain due to roundworm colic, and intercostal neuralgia.
3. Used for carbuncles, swelling and toxin, burns, and venomous snake bites.
Additionally, it can be made into an anesthetic for local anesthesia.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–10 g; or soaked in alcohol. External use: appropriate amount, decoction for washing or gargling; or fresh herb mashed and applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in pregnancy. This herb is slightly toxic; dosage should not be excessive to avoid symptoms such as dizziness, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Avoid concurrent use with acidic foods.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The root and root bark contain nitidine, chelerythrine, dihydrochelerythrine, nitidine chloride, oxidized chelerythrine, 6-ethoxychelerythrine, demethylchelerythrine, 6-methoxy-5,6-dihydrochelerythrine, and other alkaloids. The rhizome contains syringaresinol glucoside. The stem bark also contains coumarin and sterols.
2. Pharmacological effects: Radix Zanthoxyli has analgesic and sedative effects. Its analgesic effect is central, unrelated to morphine receptors but related to brain monoamine mediators; the analgesic mechanism may be related to nitidine content. Intraperitoneal injection of the extract N4 significantly reduces spontaneous activity in mice and has a synergistic effect with subthreshold doses of pentobarbital. Nitidine chloride and 6-ethoxychelerythrine have significant cardiotonic effects; nitidine chloride also has hypotensive effects in rabbits. Various alkaloids in this herb have anticancer effects; for example, nitidine chloride shows strong anticancer activity, with life extension rates of 109% and 36% in mice with leukemia P388 and L1210 at a dose of 4 mg/kg, respectively. The ethanol extract strongly inhibits hemolytic streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus.
3. Clinical reports: Ulcer disease: An ulcer pill made from Radix Zanthoxyli and Garcinia bark (honey pill, 10 g per pill) is taken 1 pill each time, 3 times daily, for 20–25 days per course, continuing until ulcer healing or scar formation. A total of 60 cases of various ulcers were treated; 47 cases (78.3%) healed after medication, while 13 cases (21.7%) showed no change or no scar formation.
