[Overview] This herb is also known as Mountain Chrysanthemum Flower, Thousand-layer Chrysanthemum, and Yellow Chrysanthemum Flower. It is the capitulum (flower head) of Chrysanthemum indicum L., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is widely produced in most regions of China. The flowers are harvested at the beginning of blooming in autumn and winter, then dried in the sun or steamed before drying, or used fresh.
[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Heart meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies.
[Applications]
1. Used for heat toxin sores and carbuncles, sore throat. For treating carbuncles and furuncles, it is often combined with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Taraxacum mongolicum (Pugongying), Viola yedoensis (Zihuadiding), Forsythia suspensa (Lianqiao), etc., as in formulas like Wuwei Xiaodu Yin (Five-Ingredient Detoxifying Drink). For sore throat, it is commonly combined with Morus alba leaf (Sangye), Lonicera japonica (Yinhua), Forsythia suspensa (Lianqiao), etc. This herb can also be used for eczema, pemphigus, tinea, and ulcers, both internally and externally.
2. Used for liver fire causing red, swollen, painful eyes, headache, and dizziness; it can be combined with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Buddleja officinalis (Mimenghua), Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao), Cassia obtusifolia (Juemingzi), etc. If liver heat causes violent red eyes, it can also be decocted with Coptis chinensis (Huanglian) for frequent washing. Additionally, it is commonly used clinically to treat chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, cervicitis, and prostatitis.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically; decoction used for fumigation and washing.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in patients with spleen and stomach deficiency cold.

1. Chemical Constituents: Indian Chrysanthemum Flower mainly contains indicum lactone, indicum alcohol, indicum diol, indicum ketone, chrysanthemum oil cyclohexanone, cis-spironol ether, angeloyl indicum, scopoletin, acacetin, sophoricoside, luteolin, centaureidin, chrysanthemum yellow pigment, and also contains palmitic acid, carotenoid glycosides, etc.
2. Pharmacological Effects: The aqueous extract of Indian Chrysanthemum Flower inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Its injection, crude preparation, and extracts regulate hemodynamics and have anti-myocardial ischemia effects. The liquid and ethanol extracts show antihypertensive effects in experimental animals. The aqueous extract significantly inhibits ADP-, Staphylococcus aureus-, and rabbit collagen-induced platelet aggregation in rats in vitro. Total flavonoids, acacetin, acacetin-7-glucoside, luteolin, and luteolin-7-glucoside selectively inhibit cAMP phosphodiesterase and cGMP phosphodiesterase in animal myocardium and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells. The injection has antipyretic effects in rabbits induced by triple bacterial vaccine. The aqueous extract significantly enhances macrophage phagocytic function.
3. Clinical Reports: (1) Epidemic parotitis: 15 g of Indian Chrysanthemum Flower decocted as tea, one dose daily for one week, treated 56 cases with 49 cured, 5 improved, 2 discontinued. [Guangxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1983,(3):11] (2) Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease: Indian Chrysanthemum Flower suppository (4 g crude drug each), inserted 5–7 cm into the rectum before sleep nightly. Treated 100 cases with 46 markedly effective, 44 effective, 10 ineffective; total effective rate 90%. [Shaanxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987,8(11):498] (3) Prostatitis: Indian Chrysanthemum Flower suppository (1 g extract each), inserted into rectum, 2 suppositories daily. Treated 175 cases with 60% markedly effective rate, total effective rate 93%. [Chinese Medicine Bulletin, 1984,9(5):48]
