[Overview] This herb is also known as Feng Teng, Da Feng Teng, Yan Hu Jiao, and Man Keng Xiang. It is the vine stem of Piper kadsura (Choisy) Obwi, a plant of the Piperaceae family. It is mainly produced in Fujian, Guangdong, Taiwan, and other regions. Harvested in summer and autumn by cutting, removing roots and leaves, washing clean, and drying in the sun.

[Properties] The taste is pungent and bitter, with a slightly warm nature. It enters the liver and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Dispel wind and eliminate dampness, unblock the channels, and relieve pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, joint stiffness and pain, and spasms. Commonly combined with Qiang Huo, Du Huo, Qin Jiao, Dang Gui, Gui Xin, etc., as in the formula Juan Bi Yang. For treating Bai Hu Li Jie Feng with radiating pain, it can be soaked with pine resin, mulberry twig, Wu Jia Pi, Dang Gui, etc., as in Song Jie Jiu. Clinically also used for hemiplegia and limb numbness after stroke.
2. Used for cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, and traumatic injuries. For abdominal pain, often combined with Su Geng, Xiang Fu, Chen Pi; for traumatic injuries, can be combined with Da Xue Teng.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or soaked in wine.

1. Chemical constituents: The vine stem contains kadsurenone, kadsurenol, kadsurarin, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and volatile oils.

Pharmacological effects: Pre-administration of Caulis Piperis Kadsurae extract in rats can reduce endotoxin-induced hypotension and permeability-increased pulmonary edema; it can increase myocardial nutritive blood flow in mice and reduce collateral vascular resistance in ischemic myocardium in dogs.
