[Overview] This herb is also known as Yinchenhao, Mianyinchen, and Ronghao. It is the aerial part of the Asteraceae family plants Artemisia scoparia Waldst. et Kit. or Artemisia capillaris Thunb. The former is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Hebei, Shanxi, etc., while the latter is mainly produced in Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, and other regions. It is harvested in spring when the seedlings are 6–10 cm tall or cut in summer and autumn when flower buds mature, removing roots and old stems, then dried in the sun. The rootless seedlings harvested in spring are commonly called “Mianyinchen”; the aerial parts harvested in summer and autumn are commonly called “Yinchenhao.”
[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Spleen, Stomach, and Bladder meridians.
[Actions] Clears damp-heat and relieves jaundice.
[Applications] 1. Used for jaundice, applicable for both damp-heat (yang jaundice) and cold-damp (yin jaundice) types. If damp-heat stagnation is present with symptoms of fever, bright yellow discoloration of body and eyes, and short red urine, it can be combined with Gardenia and Rhubarb, as in Yinchenhao Decoction (茵陈蒿汤). If dampness predominates over heat with difficult urination, epigastric fullness, and white greasy tongue coating, it is often combined with Poria and Polyporus, as in Yinchen Wuling Powder (茵陈五苓散). For yin jaundice with dull complexion, smoky yellow color, aversion to cold, and abdominal distension, it is often combined with Aconite and Atractylodes, as in Yinchen Shufu Decoction (茵陈术附汤). Clinically, it is commonly used to treat infectious hepatitis, cholecystitis, and cholelithiasis.
2. Used for short red urination caused by summer-heat or damp-warm diseases, accompanied by epigastric fullness and poor appetite, yellow greasy tongue coating; often combined with Scutellaria and Talcum, as in Ganlu Xiaodu Pill (甘露消毒丹).
3. Used for damp sores, scabies, and urticaria; can be used both internally and externally, often combined with Dictamnus and Kochia scoparia.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–15 g; can be doubled if used alone; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, decocted for washing.
[Cautions] Not suitable for jaundice due to spleen deficiency and blood deficiency (deficiency jaundice) or atrophy jaundice.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Yinchen contains 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, etc. The whole herb contains volatile oil, whose main components include β-pinene, scoparone (Yinchen diynes), scoparone ketone, scoparone diene ketone, scoparone enyne, and scoparone lactone. Artemisia scoparia contains 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-hydroxyacetophenone, volatile oils, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Preparations of Yinchen and its multiple components promote bile secretion and bile excretion; protect against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury in rats; have antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, anticoagulant, and fibrinolytic effects; exhibit antitumor activity by directly killing tumor cell proliferation; possess diuretic, antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. The volatile oil strongly inhibits pathogenic skin fungi; decoctions inhibit Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi A, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Shigella, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria meningitidis, and influenza virus type 6 to varying degrees; also lethal to Leptospira.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Oral ulcers: Yinchen 30 g daily, decocted for internal use or gargling. Treated 40 cases, all healed in 3–4 days, especially effective for simple oral mucosal ulcers. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(5):48] 2) Hyperlipidemia: Yinchen 15 g daily as a tea substitute, one month per course; treated 82 patients with hypercholesterolemia, serum cholesterol decreased by an average of 1.102 mmol/L (42.4 mg%), average reduction rate 14.3%.
