[Overview] This herb is also known as Paihuaihua, Bitouhua, and Cimei flower. It is the flower bud of Rosa rugosa Thunb., a plant of the Rosaceae family. Originally native to northern China, it is now cultivated throughout the country. The main production areas for the medicinal material are Changxing in Zhejiang, Wuxi and Suzhou in Jiangsu, with the highest quality coming from Changxing, Zhejiang. The flower buds are harvested in batches in late spring and summer-autumn before blooming, then promptly dried over low heat or in the shade.

[Properties] Taste: sweet, slightly bitter; nature: warm. Enters the Liver and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Regulates Qi and relieves constraint, harmonizes blood and regulates menstruation.

[Applications]
1. Used for chest and hypochondriac fullness and distension, breast distension and pain, and epigastric pain caused by Liver Qi stagnation. For chest and hypochondriac distension and pain due to Liver Qi stagnation, it is often combined with Xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus), Qingpi (green tangerine peel), and Yujin (Curcumae Radix). If accompanied by breast distension, pain, or lumps, it may be combined with Chuanlianzi (Melia toosendan), Juye (Citrus leaf), and Wangbuliuxing (Vaccaria seed). For Liver Qi invading the Stomach causing epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, belching, nausea, and poor appetite, it can be combined with Foshou (Citrus medica), Muxiang (Aucklandia), and Su Geng (Perilla stem).
2. Used for irregular menstruation and dysmenorrhea caused by Qi stagnation and blood stasis in women; can be combined with Yimucao (Leonurus), Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), etc.
3. Used for traumatic injuries; can be used alone soaked in wine or combined with Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), etc.
Additionally, this herb can be used for intestinal inflammation, dysentery, leukorrhea, and breast pain.

1. Chemical constituents: The fresh flowers contain volatile oil (rose oil), with the main component being citronellol. They also contain geraniol, nerol, eugenol, phenylethanol, etc. The flowers further contain quercitrin, bitter principles, tannins, fixed oils, gallic acid, cichoriin, waxes, and others.
